Movie that shot in Wilmington in 2022 to premiere later this summer

"The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat," a movie that shot in the Wilmington area in 2022, has an air date.

According to a post on the social media platform X by the film's producer, Searchlight Pictures

Prominently featured in the poster for the film is Wilmington's Rx Chicken & Oysters at Fifth and Castle streets, which was transformed into Earl's for the movie.

"That’s us!" Rx posted to its Facebook page. "We’re so looking forward to everyone seeing what an amazing job they did taking our restaurant back to two different time periods: the '60s and the '90s. Such a cool experience!"

Based on the best-selling novel by Edward Kelsey Moore, the movie is about a trio of Black women in Indiana who've been best friends since high school in the 1960s, when they were nicknamed The Supremes, after the singing group.

In the book, the action toggles between the '60s and the '90s, when the women have to support each other through major life challenges involving romance, family and health.

"Earl's" was directed by Tiny Mabry from a screenplay by Cee Marcellus and Tina Mabry. Mabry, whose acclaimed independent drama "Mississippi Damned" screened in Wilmington in 2009 for the Cucalorus Film Festival, has become a sought-after writer, director and producer for multiple TV series, including the shows "Dear White People" and "Queen of the South."

"Earl's" star-studded Black cast includes Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor ("King Richard"), Sanaa Lathan ("Love and Basketball"), Uzo Aduba ("Orange is the New Black," "Lightyear"), Mekhi Phifer ("8 Mile"), Vondie Curtis Hall ("Chicago Hope") and Russell Hornsby ("The Hate U Give," "Fences," "Meet the Parents").

In addition to Rx, "Earl's" Wilmington locations include Greenfield Lake's gazebo and footbridge; St. James Episcopal church at Third and Market streets; homes on Kenwood Avenue, Forest Hills Drive and South Fourth Street; and historic Thalian Hall.

The movie also transformned the parking lot across the street from Rx into a set for OK Used Cars.
