    Delaware players impact college softball as NCAA tournament begins

    As the NCAA tournaments begin we are taking a look at some former Delaware softball standouts that are having an impact at the college level. There are some local players playing some significant roles on their teams.

    The Liberty University Flames roster includes Kalyn Yoder (Delmarva Christian) and Rachel Craine (Red Lion). The Flames are 36-23 on the season and are in the Athens, GA Regional where they will face Charlotte on Friday May 17 at 3 pm.     University of North Carolina, Wilmington. UNCW Seahawks are the CAA Champs and their roster includes Tayler Vitola (Appoquinimink). UNCW is 33-21 on the season. Tayler is the granddaughter of our own 302 sports Glenn Frazer.     The Siena College St. Bernard’s roster includes two former Delaware high school players from Laurel. Carly Venables and Nicole Patille .  They have a season record of 33-20, are MAAC Champs and will see the University of Texas in the Austin Regional Friday May 17 at 4 pm.     The University of Albany Great Danes roster includes Morgan Petty, former Milford HS standout. The Danes are 33-12 on the season and are the America East Champs.     The Clemson University Tigers roster includes Julia Bomhardt from Indian RIver. Their season record is  34-17 and Clemson will face Southeastern Louisiana in the Tuscaloosa Regional.     The University of South Carolina Upstate roster includes Lydia Drake from Middletown High School. The Spartans are 30-21 overall and made program history winning the school’s first ever Big South Championship.     The Jackson State Tigers have William Penn grad Madison Perry . They are 33-17 on the season and are SWAC Champs.     The Florida Atlantic roster includes Zoe Jones from Padua Academy. The Owls are 41-14 on the season and find themselves in the Gainesville Regional. They will play The University of South Alabama Friday May 17th and 2:30. Jones will see some familiar faces in the matchup as the University of South Alabama roster finds Marlayna Capaldi from The Charter School of Wilmington and Cadence WIlliams , a pitcher from neighboring Rising Sun (MD). The Jags are 32-18-1 on the season.     The Chattanooga Mocs roster includes Izzy Alley from Indian River High School. The Mocs are 41-12 on the season and won the SOCON Title.     Although not Delaware high school softball players, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Maddie and Mariah Penta from Bohemia Manor High School in neighboring North East Md. The sisters both play for Auburn who will take on UCF in the Tallahassee Regional.

    The Wilmington University roster includes former Delaware high school players Jess Reed (Lake Forest), Lexi Moore (Smyrna), Kylie Saienni (Red Lion), Isabella Eleazer (Appoquinimink), Cassidy Zelano (Cab Calloway), Sara Miller (Smyrna), Rylee Maloney (Caravel Academy), Delani Sheehan (DMA), Taylor Gillis (Wilmongton Charter), Sam Freeland (DMA), and Gigi Duca (Smyrna). The Wildcats (43-14, 23-2 at home) have already won the East Region after shutting out Assumption 8-0 this past weekend to move into the East Super Regionals. They will host Adelphi at 11 am today (5/14) and tomorrow (5/15) at 11 am for Game 2 in the best of 3 series.     The Eastern University Eagles roster has Kacie Noonan from Newark Charter on it. They are 30-6 on the season and are the MAC Commonwealth Tournament Champs. They take on Randolph Macon Thursday 5/16 at 2:30 in Salisbury, MD. The Randolph Macon roster has a familiar face in Sierra Livingston from Sussex Tech.     Virginia Wesleyan boasts two Delaware grads on the roster – Savannah Laird (Appoquinimink) and Autumn Booth (Delmar). The Marlins are 35-8 on the season and are the ODAC Champs for the 15th time in program history. They will take on Eastern Connecticut State on Thursday May16th in Virginia Beach.

    The Salisbury University roster includes former Delaware high school softball players Abby Mace (Smyrna), Natalie Paoli (Caravel Academy), Jillian Dawson (Appoquinimink), Lexie Delcollo (DMA), Taylor Scott (Woodbridge), and Morgan Moxley (Caravel Academy).

    The No. 1 seed SeaGulls are 36-5 on the season (26-1 at home) and will face No. 4 seed  Manhattanville in the NCAA DIII Regionals on Thursday May 16th at home in Margie Knight Stadium. You can catch this game on Sea Gulls Sports Network. https://team1sports.com/suseagulls/

    The Rowan University Profs finished their season 34-7 and won their 12th NJAC Title. Breanna Bryant (Caravel Academy) and Kate Evick (Sussex Central) will find themselves hosting Centenary on Thursday May 16th at 12:00. You can catch this game at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBK20wRAUhc

    The No. 1 Moravian Greyhounds have Ajala Elmore on their roster. She is from Wilmington Friends and is a part of the roster that went 30-8 on the season and helped her team win the Landmark Conference Title. They play Penn College at 12:00 on Thursday May 16.

    Roanoke College has three Delaware softball players on the roster. Jordyn DiFava (Delmarva Christian), Aniyah Blake (Indian River), and Shaniya Lewis (Sussex Tech). The Maroons went 30-14, receiving an at-large bid into the NCAA tournament. They play in Bethlehem, PA and will take on Muskingum University
