FLORIDA — A strong fall cold front is moving through Florida on Saturday, October 17, bringing gusts of 35 to 45 mph. North winds will pull in much cooler air, dropping feels-like temperatures into the 40s and 50s across northern Florida by Sunday morning. The change follows a hot Friday, when feels-like readings topped 100 degrees in South Florida. Areas farther south will feel less of the cooldown and may see rain and storms instead.

DeSantis declares north Florida state of emergency amid hurricane threat

Gov. Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency in 25 north Florida counties, from Escambia to Baker counties, as Tropical Storm Isaias is forecast to strengthen and threaten parts of the Gulf Coast later this week. The executive order, signed Tuesday, allows the state to begin positioning emergency resources ahead of the season’s likely first hurricane and gives agencies additional flexibility to respond if conditions worsen. "Today, I signed an Executive Order issuing a state of emergency ahead of potential impacts,” DeSantis said in a statement. "This order will allow the Florida Division of Emergency Management to stage critical preparedness resources and ensure Florida is ready to respond." State emergency officials are mobilizing generators, fuel, flood barriers, bottled water, shelf-stable meals, tarps, sandbags and other supplies to staging areas in Tallahassee and Santa Rosa County for rapid deployment. The Florida Division of Emergency Management said current forecasts indicate the system could strengthen into an almost major hurricane before making landfall somewhere along the central Gulf Coast later this week. While the exact track remains uncertain, officials warned that impacts could extend well to the east of the landfall location.
