    Officials report possible cause of Wilkes-Barre Township fire

    WILKES-BARRE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — 28/22 News is learning more about what caused transformer fires in a Wilkes-Barre business district .

    Officials say the fires were likely caused by a tractor-trailer that snagged power lines in Wilkes-Barre Township.

    Many without power in Lackawanna County

    Around 8:45 p.m. Tuesday thick, black smoke could be seen in the area of Coal Street and Highland Park Boulevard as a result of burning oil from the transformers.

    The fire knocked out traffic lights and caused roughly 500 PPL customers to go hours without power .

    As of Wednesday, power has been restored.
