Hungry Wichitans have a variety of new places to check out as potential palate pleasers. Several new restaurants have opened in the past few weeks.

Hawaiian Brothers has opened on the spot previously occupied by Denny’s at 4108 Kemp Blvd.

As the name implies, the eatery has a Hawaii-inspired menu specializing in plate lunches with chicken and pork and side dishes of rice and macaroni. Salads are also a specialty.

The company was founded by a couple of brothers not from Honolulu — but from Missouri.

The restaurant is a ground-up build after the demolition of Denny’s, which had formerly been a Carrow’s restaurant.

Cuzins Flying Pig BBQ opened in late April at 4322 Burkburnett Rd. The offerings include plates with favorites like brisket, ham, ribs and sausage. Sandwiches are available, too, as well as traditional sides. The restaurant also sells its meats by the pound.

The business offers a military discount for nearby Sheppard Air Force Base.

Barbarita’s Restaurant Bar opened its new location in May at 2611 Plaza Parkway.  It’s owned by a local family and offers a Mexican menu of traditional fare, along with homemade tortillas.

Another entry into the popular Mexican cuisine is La Perla Tapitia at 4525 Maplewood Ave. In addition to south of the border favorites, the new business specializes in seafood. The business occupies the building that formerly held Vaca Loca, another Mexican food restaurant.

After some delays and mystery about the menu, Volcano Sushi opened its doors at 3110 Midwestern Parkway in late April. The menu includes more than 100 options ranging from eel to tuna, along with a variety of rolls.

The restaurant is in the building formerly occupied by Pho Corner restaurant.
