WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — Lake levels are up and so are the spirits of Texomans. The weather is getting warmer which means it’s almost time to hit the lakes to boat or swim.

But fishing and hunting guide Greg Pavur says the rain indicates that fishing might be the best lake activity this summer.

“Just the freshwater in the lakes helps out the fisheries a lot,” Pavur said. “Right now, the fish are spawning as you can see some of the fish in the shallow waters. But the spawn is real important when the lakes come up. So those little baby fish, the fry, can have places to hide and get away. And it’s just really all around better for the lakes to come up in the springtime.”

Down at Lake Arrowhead, the change is visible firsthand. Charles Black fishes at the Arrowhead Fishing Pier regularly and he said the higher water levels definitely provide better fishing.

“It just wasn’t very good, you know, good fishing with the water level down the way it is when it’s back up because the fish go deeper, you know swim deeper because the water level is so low,” Black said.

Black was fishing for crappie off of the pier, but they aren’t the only fish you can find in the lake. catfish, largemouth and white bass, and sunfish are other fish that can be found at Arrowhead.

“But like I said, it’s good right now and it’s even better since the lake level is back up,” Black said.

So, if you’re looking for an activity to get into around a lake this coming summer, picking up a rod and reel might be the best choice.
