WICHITA FALLS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — Students with the Formula Society of Automotive Engineers at MSU Texas unveiled their newly built Formula-style race car on Friday.

The car has a Honda C-B-R-600 engine and can reach speeds of up to 90 to 100 miles per hour without horsepower restrictions.

MSU’s Formula Society of Automotive Engineer Students has again captured the spotlight by unveiling its latest race car.

They call it MR2. It was designed and built entirely by a dedicated team of students. This car represents two years of hard work, collaboration and improvement from the first model.

“The biggest difference is the smoothness. As far as how it turns, there is much less scrub; there is much less compliance, or squeaking or rattling, in the entire thing,” explained Sharome Burton, Chief Engineer of Mustangs Formula Racing.

Burton added that the racecar performs smoother turns and handles corners better than its predecessor.

“It’s smoother rolling, and transfers load better. With track cars, you have a lot of high-G turns, sharp corners and all that,” he said. “This car is a lot less susceptible to turnovers and handles a lot better than the one before.”

Though still a work in progress, MR2 is on the right track to compete on a high level.

“Getting the bodywork done is the main thing. That’s where we can show our sponsors and get more eyes on the product. The next step would be getting the testing underway,” Burton explained.

However, since MSU’s final exams are approaching, testing the car will have to wait until then.

“Learning what works and doesn’t work [is important] because you won’t know the product is as good as you think it is until you test it out in real-world conditions,” Burton said. “So, bodywork, testing and eventually competition; hopefully in Arlington in October.”

The goal is to meet the qualifications to enter MR2 into Formula SAE, a series of competitions where various universities compete to design and manufacture the ideal racing car.

With their sights set on victory, this group of bright students will continue to travel the road leading to greatness.

Burton added that funding is the biggest challenge in this process, so if you want to donate to this program, give online.
