Dog shows are common in Wichita Falls, but one coming in June will have little to do with brushing and primping.

The Wichita County Sheriff’s Office will host the 2024 National Detector Trials and Region 25 Canine Field Trials.

That means police dogs and their handlers will come from all over the country to show their stuff. Events will be June 3-7 at the Bridwell Ag Center while headquarters will be at the Delta Marriot Hotel.

On Wednesday, the Sheriff’s Office provided a demonstration for news media. The SO hopes to stir interest in the event to raise donations for some of the expenses.

“For this to come to Wichita Falls is really something,” Sheriff David Duke said.

He said teams will come from as far away as New York City to compete. These are canine officers and their handlers who sniff out drugs, find explosives and chase down suspects.

Sheriff's Sgt. Tim Putney said that in addition to certification, the teams will compete for trophies.

Sheriff's Lt. Jeff Penney is the WCSO K9 supervisor.

“I think it’s a really good opportunity for the town to make some money and to show what Wichita Falls has,” Penney said.

He said some of the competition events will be open to the public.

He said contributors can donate cash toward expenses or make in-kind contributions. Space for vendor booths is also be available.

Anyone who can help may contact Penney at 940-766-8170, ext. 4031.
