Car crash leads to recovery of stolen checks

On April 15, officers went to the area of Demarr Road and Duly Drive in White Plains for the report of a vehicle accident with injuries. Upon arrival, officers located a Mercedes Benz off the roadway with significant front-end damage and airbags deployed. There were no occupants in the vehicle at the time of the crash, charging documents say.

Shortly after, Charles County 911 received a crash alert from an iPhone with an open telephone line which had sounds described as a “person running and out of breath,” according to charging documents.

A homeowner on Demarr Road said he observed two subjects run from the vehicle into a wooded area near the crash, and officers began canvassing the area to find the occupants.

Two individuals were located and identified as Kenneth Joseph Cabrera, 23, of Jersey City, N.J., and Neftli Perez, 24, of Bronx, N.Y., charging documents say.

A search of the crashed vehicle yielded six business checks that totaled $177,812, the documents say.

Contact was made with the owners of the checks and it was determined that Cabrera and Perez were not permitted to be in possession of them. Cabrera said that he ran from the crash because his driver’s license was suspended, charging documents say.

Cabrera and Perez both face four counts of felony theft and one count of a felony theft scheme for over $100,000.

Waldorf man charged with fraud

On April 18, officers responded to the report of potential fraud at Tienda Karina Spanish Market on Central Avenue in Waldorf. Upon arrival, officers made contact with the owner of SML Construction LLC who reported the potential fraud, charging documents say.

Through an investigation, it was understood by officers that Luis Miguel Cordova-Molina, 21, of Waldorf allegedly obtained checks belonging to his employer and wrote a fraudulent check in the owner of SML Construction’s name for $1,800, according to charging documents.

Cordova-Molina was at the scene and arrested, and allegedly admitted to attempting to cash the check and writing it himself, the documents say. He faces a felony fraud charge and two theft misdemeanors.

Officers serve search warrant in Waldorf

On April 16, officers obtained a warrant for the search of Kenneth Duane Yates, 44, of Waldorf.

The next day, narcotics detectives stopped Yates in a white Acura MDX in the area of Copley Avenue and Smallwood Drive after waiting for him to leave his house on Jefferson Lane.

Yates was taken into custody and detectives allegedly located 1.2 grams of crack cocaine in the center console of the vehicle, according to charging documents.

After a thorough search of the vehicle, officers went to Yates’ residence and served the warrant after moving a woman and three children in the residence to a central location, the document says.

Detectives allegedly located a 1.6 gram bag of crack cocaine, 10 Suboxone strips, three digital scales, another digital scale with cocaine residue and razor blade, a 0.3 gram bag of cocaine, four Oxycodone Hydrochloride pills and other various items with cocaine residue on them, the charging documents say.

A gun case was located that contained a Charles Harvin double-barreled shotgun that was unsecured and easily accessible by any child in the home, charging documents say.

Additionally, a black Keltec 9 mm handgun was located in a shoe organizer that was reported stolen on April 23, 2010, from a residence in Charles County. The firearm was loaded and unsecured, the documents say.

Yates was prohibited from owning firearms due to a prior felony, according to the document. He faces multiple possession charges, drug distribution with a firearm and gun charges.

Man allegedly steals from store

On April 5, officers arrived at Home Depot for the report of a suspicious Ryder truck driver loading the store’s property.

Officers made contact with the driver of the vehicle, later identified as Michael Lee Broadway, 69, of an unknown address, who stated that he worked at Bell Nursery for a month and was picking up metal carts to take back to the business, charging documents say.

Upon asking Home Depot employees if they knew Broadway, they said that he had been picking up metal carts for the past month. The officer asked Broadway for an ID, but he said he could not find it and provided the fake name of Tully Jack Hull, according to charging documents.

While waiting on a return from dispatch, Broadway allegedly ran away from the area and was found walking in a wooded area south of Home Depot.

Officers contacted Bell Nursery and it was found that Broadway does not work for them. He had roughly $8,000 worth of metal carts loaded on the truck, the documents say. Broadway was arrested and charged with felony theft.

On April 16, officers were investigating a theft at a separate Home Depot that used a Ryder truck. After speaking with Ryder representatives, it was discovered that the truck was allegedly stolen at the time of the theft.

On April 17, officers were able to link Broadway to the vehicle at the time it was stolen. He was charged with unlawful taking of a motor vehicle and felony theft between $25,000 and $100,000.

Leonardtown man indicted for alleged child abuse

On April 4 at approximately 7:47 p.m., St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call for the report of an assault at a residence in Leonardtown and, upon arrival, found a juvenile with numerous abrasions to the neck and a laceration to the face, a sheriff’s office press release stated.

Deputies charged Darryl Anthony White Robinite, 32, of Leonardtown with felony child abuse.

According to court records, he was later released on his own recognizance.

On April 15, a St. Mary’s County grand jury indicted Robinite on three counts — second-degree child abuse, first-degree assault and second-degree assault.

Robinite’s initial appearance in circuit court is scheduled for June 10.

The defendant is being represented by private attorneys Andrew D. Alpert and Jason Miller. Prosecution of the case is bing handled by Zachary Varda of the St. Mary’s County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Lexington Park man busted for drugs

On April 18, St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office detectives served a search and seizure warrant at a residence on Admiral Lane in Lexington Park. A suspect — identified in a sheriff’s office press release as Trevone Damone Butler, 33, of Lexington Park — was arrested without incident.

“During the subsequent search, detectives located U.S. currency, suspected crack cocaine and a digital scale with residue from what is suspected to be a controlled dangerous substance,” the release stated. “Detectives also discovered a privately manufactured lower receiver for an AR-15-style rifle.”

Butler was charged with two counts of drug possession with intent to distribute, possession of firearms during a drug trafficking crime, possession of drug production equipment, illegal firearm possession by an individual with a felony conviction and other firearm charges.

Butler is being held without bond. A district court hearing on the charges he is facing is scheduled for May 16.

County woman charged with drug distribution

St. Mary’s sheriff’s office detectives served warrants on a Lexington Park residence April 17 as well as a search and seizure warrant on a 37-year-old Lexington Park woman.

According to a sheriff’s office press release, Lakesha Denise Savoy has been a suspect in an extensive drug investigation.

Savoy was taken into custody and charged with three counts of drug possession with intent to distribute. Detectives confiscated cash and currency during her arrest.

Additionally, numerous digital scales containing drug residue, suspected fentanyl, suspected crack cocaine and suspected Suboxone in sufficient quantities and package in a manner indicating an intent to distribute were seized from the residence.

Savoy is being held without bond. A district court hearing on the charges she is facing is scheduled for May 14.

Lexington Park man charged with assault

On April 18, Deputy Brandon Reynolds was sent to a Lexington Park residence for the report of an assault. A woman at the home had visible signs of injury to her face, neck and wrist.

She alleged that a 38-year-old Lexington Park man tried to strangle her.

Reynolds stated in court documents that the woman alleged, “She was unable to breathe while the defendant was strangling her.”

The defendant — identified as David R. Spence — “denied any physical altercation occurred,” Reynolds stated.

The deputy noted in court papers that Spence’s accuser provided an audio recording of the alleged attack.

Assault suspect remains at large

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the whereabouts of Devone Articis Hall, 33, no fixed address, in connection with an assault that happened April 3 in Lexington Park. Hall is approximately 5-foot, 6-inches tall with a thin build.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Hall, and sheriff’s office detectives are asking for the public’s assistance in locating him.

Due to the nature of the assault, detectives caution that Hall may pose an immediate danger to the public. Individuals are urged not to approach him and to immediately contact 911 if they encounter him.

Lusby man charged with assault

On April 14, Deputy R. Jones of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office investigated an alleged assault in the the Drum Point area of Lusby.

According to Jones, a man identified Kendall Mitchell Oliver, 21, of Lusby got into a verbal argument with another man while they were fishing. Oliver’s accuser was allegedly hit over the head with a vodka bottle, the officer stated in court documents.

The injured man was transported to CalvertHealth Medical Center for treatment of his injury.

Jones said Oliver denied hitting his accuser with a bottle.

Oliver was charged with first-degree assault and second-degree assault. On April 15, he posted $500 bond and was released.

A district court hearing on the charges Oliver is facing is scheduled for May 15.

D.C. man charged with weapons violation

On April 15, Deputy T. Bowen of the Calvert sheriff’s office stopped a vehicle on Route 260 and Limerick Lane in Owings due to a brake light problem. The driver admitted to the deputy he had a handgun in the vehicle as he works as an armed security guard.

The driver, identified as Christopher Alexander Peasant, 32, of Washington, D.C., admitted he did not have a Maryland concealed carry permit.

According to Bowen, a loaded Glock and a Bowie knife were found in the vehicle. Peasant told the deputy the knife was “a souvenir.”

Peasant was charged with three misdemeanors for having a handgun in the vehicle, on his person and concealed. He was released on his own recognizance. A district court hearing on the charges Peasant is facing is scheduled for May 17.

Man busted for drugs

During the early afternoon hours of April 16, Calvert sheriff’s office detectives executed a court approved search and seizure warrant at a house in Lusby. At the house, Milburn Alexander Buckler, 66, of Lusby was arrested without incident.

In addition to finding approximately 6.5 grams of suspected crack cocaine, deputies seized a digital scale and over 25 guns, including several shotguns and handguns.

Buckler was charged with possession of drugs with intent to distribute. He is being held without bond. A district court hearing on the charges he is facing is scheduled for May 17.

Alleged assault at carryout leads to charges

On April 18 Deputy Ian Tunnell investigated an assault that allegedly occurred at Burger King in Prince Frederick.

The suspect — identified as Thomas Deshay Gary Jr., 27, of Lusby — was apprehended by deputies in another area of Prince Frederick.

Tunnell stated in court documents that Gary resisted arrest and assaulted deputies in the process. He allegedly told one deputy he was going to set his house on fire.

Tunnell also stated in charging papers that the alleged assault at the carryout was captured on video.

Gary was charged with two counts of second-degree assault and one count each of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and making a arson threat.

After a district court hearing Monday, Gary remained in jail on a no-bond status. A hearing on the charges he is facing is schedule for May 22.

Man charged with assault, illegal weapon possession

On April 18, Deputy Antonio Tavares of the Calvert sheriff’s office was sent to an area in St. Leonard to investigate a report of construction workers being threatened by a man allegedly wielding a gun.

A man identified as Kyle Michael Stoneman, 45, of St. Leonard was riding a four-wheeler, allegedly yelling racial slurs at a construction worker while brandishing a gun.

During the investigation, Tavares learned Stoneman has prior convictions that prohibit him from possessing a gun. A subsequent search of Stoneman’s home yielded a handgun, hunting knife and ammunition.

Stoneman was charged with two counts of illegal possession of a firearm and one count each of illegal possession of ammunition, and second-degree assault.

Stoneman is being held without bond. A district court hearing on the charges he is facing is scheduled for May 17.
