Reflecting on Earth Day, which is celebrated annually on April 22, my thoughts turned to how very important it has become to focus global attention on the preservation of our fragile environment and the rehabilitation of the harm we, as the human species, have contributed to its decline. It would be so easy for us to throw up our hands, crank up the air-conditioning and accept our fate, while we slowly burn up or drown. But seriously, what can we do, collectively and as individuals...

Rocky Mount High School - Emmanuel Perkins
BIOGRAPHY: My name is Emmanuel Perkins and I am a senior at Rocky Mount High School this year. I have attended Rocky Mount High School since freshman year and have had the opportunity to join the various clubs and organizations such as National Honor Society, I am currently the President of Student Government Association, yearbook, band, choir, and I am the social media creator for the football and basketball teams but the list goes on. I play several instruments that I have taught myself with piano being number one and I was taught saxophone during my time in high school. I currently have a weighted GPA of 4.1 and look forward to graduation day. I take pride in my school and the part I play in it but it is almost time for the next chapter of my story. I plan to attend NC State University or UNC Charlotte to major in music education. I dedicate my eorts to pouring into the life of others so what better way to do that than to become a teacher. Lastly, I want to say thank you to my mother for everything she has done to keep her boy on the right path of excellence and preventing me from becoming another statistic. Some may say a black woman can’t raise a man but my mother is the exception and a walking example that it can be done if you stay prayed up. I don’t take anything for granted because I realize we can be here today and gone tomorrow so I thank God for everything he has done and everything he is going to do because of who I am connected to. Thank you for your time because you haven’t seen anything yet.
