Letter: Plenty of ways to save the Earth

    By Bobby Burns,

Reflecting on Earth Day, which is celebrated annually on April 22, my thoughts turned to how very important it has become to focus global attention on the preservation of our fragile environment and the rehabilitation of the harm we, as the human species, have contributed to its decline. It would be so easy for us to throw up our hands, crank up the air-conditioning and accept our fate, while we slowly burn up or drown.

But seriously, what can we do, collectively and as individuals to help stem the rising tide of global warming?

    Lots!

First of all, we must all use our voices and our votes to support those in positions of power who are seriously working on these important issues: the Greta Thunburgs of the world, for starters.

So many of us could have impactful influences by simply eating less meat and dairy. Do we still use paper towels, Styrofoam containers, plastic bottles and bags? How about our transportation? Are we still driving six- or eight-cylinder cars or trucks when four-cylinder vehicles would work fine? Or better yet, consider an electric or hybrid vehicle.

Do we park the car and walk or bike when we can? Do we support organizations that work to support green spaces? Do we avoid financial support for our investment in fossil fuel industries? Have we minimized our own waste? Do we recycle? Do we compost? Do we support our local, national and international environmental organizations? Will we leave this world a better place for future generations?
