Possible damaging winds or a tornado on Sunday, especially in the morning hours after sunrise.
BRIDGEPORT, W.Va (WDTV) - A powerful late Winter storm is moving through the East Coast on Sunday. This has brought tornadoes, damaging winds, destruction, and worse to many parts of the United States along and east of the Mississippi River. This storm system will be moving through the Mountain State on Sunday. There is still a chance for strong, damaging winds on Sunday morning here in NCWV, but there is also the possibility of tornadoes. Very strong winds through the atmosphere, especially just above ground level could pull down damaging winds to the surface. In addition, winds are strongly turning from the southeast to the southwest in the lower levels while increasing rapidly with height. This means the air is turning, or spinning fast, and this has a tendency to spin showers and thunderstorms along with it. A rotating thunderstorm is called a ‘supercell’ and these are the thunderstorms that spawn tornadoes. What we are lacking in the scenario is “instability”. The air is not that humid and will try to resist moving upward. However, with the rising sun, this will try to change. So, from sunrise through late morning, severe weather will be possible and damaging winds are the main threat. However, we’ll be watching for possible tornadoes, too.
