WHEELING, W.Va. (WTRF) – The Ohio Valley has felt the effects following widespread flooding throughout the region, and Wheeling Island Stadium is one of the main areas of concern.

The turf has sustained significant damage from the river rising, and the Ohio County Schools Board of Education made the decision to move forward with an immediate solution at their regular meeting on Monday.

Assistant Superintendent Rick Jones proposed a quote to the board for turf from Astroturf for the amount not exceeding $610,000, saying that the field was due for an upgrade anyways.

A lack of time and alternate locations also played a factor in this proposal.

Erik Schramm requested to terminate the discussion and move forward with voting as there was no way to pause the season or relocate in the amount of time they would need before the season begins.

Ultimately, the board voted to pass and move forward with the motion in a 3-2 vote, with Molly Aderholt and David Croft voting no due to wanting to vet and see if there were other quote options.

The board has worked with Astroturf in the past, and the new turf is expected to be installed in June of this year.
