Bus drivers observe rollover crash during safety demonstration
For Wendy Bula, seeing a re-enactment of what happened to her decades ago was jarring. “I remember it happening like it was yesterday,” Ms. Bula said. “It took me years to be able to ride a school bus again.” Ms. Bula, a substitute bus aide for Maumee schools, watched as a 2006 decommissioned Springfield school bus rolled over during a safety demonstration at Bubba's Heavy Duty Towing & Truck Repair in Monclova Township. Once the bus was rolled, the drivers and aides watched as firefighters approached the bus, observing how they would respond to a similar incident. Hosted by Springfield schools and the Springfield Township Fire Department, the rollover demonstration Wednesday was meant to show drivers what happens and how to prepare for similar crashes. “The drivers get to see what happens when a bus rolls over and what they can expect,” said Ryan Grooms, Springfield’s director of HR and operations. “Seeing something like this can change your perspective as a driver. Seeing it in person is 100 percent different from seeing it on video.” Once the bus was rolled over, drivers were invited to see the inside of the bus and where the mannequins ended up. Sylvania bridge set to reopen after five-month closure
Since reconstruction of Monroe Street’s bridge over U.S. 23 began in early March, Carol Thabit has eagerly watched its progress from her home on nearby Acres Road. “I can get to Kroger now without having to go to Michigan and back,” Ms. Thabit said after a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday morning on the widened span, which is expected to open sometime Saturday after its five-month makeover. While the dedication wasn’t officially a public event, nobody seemed to mind that Ms. Thabit walked in, especially since her dog Sullivan accompanied her and happily received scritches from anyone who offered a hand. The pup even got a slice of the Ohio Department of Transportation’s specially printed ribbon roll commemorating the event. “It’s opening on time. We like it when that happens,” Patrick McColley, ODOT’s district deputy director in Bowling Green, told the gathering at the bridge’s midpoint. Along with a new, second left-turn lane for westbound Monroe, the $36 million project — toward which the city of Sylvania contributed more than $7 million — also features reconfigured ramps for U.S. 23’s Monroe interchange that eliminate two sharp curves and reduce three intersections east of the bridge to one. Mr. McColley particularly noted the
