Former child care provider gets 2-year prison sentence for child’s death
CLAY COUNTY — A former child care provider from Smithville was sentenced to two years in prison as part of a plea deal stemming from a child’s death in 2021. Karen E. Vice, 55, was initially arrested by Clay County deputies in 2022 at her Smithville residence on a grand jury indictment with a felony charge of endangering the welfare of a child. The indictment alleged Vice failed to “supervise and maintain a safe sleeping environment” for a child in her care on Feb. 12, 2021.

Woman arrested after being found with 20 pounds of meth
The Buchanan County Drug Strike Force and its law enforcement partners took a woman into custody Monday after seizing nearly 20 pounds of methamphetamine from a vehicle. Sheriff Bill Puett said in a press release that the arrest was made through assistance from the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the St. Joseph Police Department.
