McKinney Man Receives Life Sentence for Murder of Fiancée in Domestic Violence Case
A McKinney man is sentenced to life in prison for the fatal shooting of his fiancée after a jury found him guilty of murder. Joel Jesus Torres, 24, claimed the shooting of Shailene Velez was an accident when he tried to clear his semi-automatic handgun, according to the Collin County District Attorney's Office.
Five North Texas Cities Among Fastest Growing In U.S.
A new report from the U.S. Census Bureau finds that five of the 15 fastest-growing cities in the country are in North Texas. Among cities with populations of at least 20,000 individuals, Celina experienced the highest growth with a 26.6% increase between July 2022 and July 2023. In total, the city increased by about 9,000 residents. Native Texas Butterfly House And Garden To Reopen In McKinney, Texas
The Native Texas Butterfly House and Garden at Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary will reopen to the public on June 8, 2024. From June 8 through September 28, 2024, visitors can walk among free-flying native butterflies and other pollinators. Guests will be able to view butterflies up close while learning about their life stages. The butterfly house is home to an assortment of native butterfly species, which vary throughout the exhibit.
