WESTFIELD, NJ — Make it three straight for the Westfield boys tennis team.

The Blue Devils tallied 92 points and had finalists at all five flights (winning three of them) to capture their third straight Union County Tournament team title at the Donald Van Blake Tennis Facility in Plainfield on Friday, May 3.

    Westfield outlasted runner-up Summit (72), Scotch Plains-Fanwood (44), New Providence (43) and Cranford (35).

Senior and first-year starter Evan Sewald (third singles), seniors Cole Hornbeck and Colin Cimei (first doubles) and second doubles freshman Chris Winters and sophomore Evan Kahn (second doubles) all won their individual brackets for the Blue Devils to earn the win.

Hornbeck has now earned three first doubles UCT titles, while Cimei has two overall.

“I’m very proud of how the players performed at the county tournament last week,” said Westfield head coach Matt Varhley, who is in his first season at the helm.

“In the finals, junior Eshaan Khera and senior Deven Patel competed very hard against two very good players,” he said. “Evan (Sewald) stepped up and delivered a strong result at third singles. And, once again, both doubles teams continue to be dominant this season. We’re hoping junior Ben Duan is able to return to the lineup at first singles this week. If the team stays healthy, we should have a strong finish to our season.”

Pending weather, this week the courts will be filled on the schedule as the Blue Devils will have five matches starting with a home matchup versus Delbarton at 4 p.m., Monday, May 6. They will visit Summit at 4 p.m., Tuesday, May 7 and at Montgomery at 4 p.m., Wednesday, May 8.

They will return home to host Cranford at 4 p.m., Thursday, May 8 and will conclude the week at the Newark Academy Invitational at 9 a.m., Saturday, May 11 where they will host CBA in the first round.
