WESTFIELD, NJ — “See How They Run,” a comedy by Phillip King, opens Saturday, May 4 at Westfield Community Players.
The play takes place in the idyllic village of Merton-cum-Middlewick, England during the 1940s. During World War II, the population of the village was preparing for the threat of the Nazi invasion. Mistaken identities, past loves and a little drink or two blend into a story full of physical comedy and laughs galore.
“This is our last show of our season. It's a very funny comedy,” said director Bill Seesselberg, who has been working with the Community Players for the last three years.
“We’ve been around in Westfield since 1934 and there are still people that don’t know we're here,” he said. “We would like the residents of the area to come out and enjoy some good theater.”
The cast includes Corrine Green, Christie Storms, Stephen A. Mennella, Ruth Kliwinski, Timothy McGovern, Allan Gershenson, Paul Arfanis, David Baker and Jason W. Fuchs.
Many of the actors at this community theater have previous acting backgrounds.
“I had stepped away from acting for quite some time as I was raising my kids and I missed the excitement of theater,” said Christie Storms, who plays Miss Skillion.
“I have been so grateful to Bill for him seeing something in me to be able to do this still,” she said. “I missed all the good fun you have when you put on a performance with such a great cast.”
This last show of the season is a change of pace from dramas earlier this year.
“I enjoyed this one in particular because there is a lot of range in my character. He’s a military man who’s in a situation that he's not quite comfortable in,” said Timothy McGovern, who plays Corporal Clive Winton.
“The way all the characters interact and merge, the connections that go on and slowly build up, and we’re all on stage is truly a masterpiece,” he said.
