Young Cardinals forming their identity
PILOT MOUNTAIN — East Surry dropped a close game to Walkertown in its Dec. 6 home opener. The Cardinals led most of the first half with a strong interior presence, but the rejuvenated Wolfpack took over the boards and forced East Surry out of the paint with a zone defense.

Anderson gets 300th Career Win
DANBURY — North Stokes’ coach, David Anderson, grabs his 300th career win when his team beat McMichael 50-40 in a non-conference contest on Friday. “Hitting 300 came with a sigh of relief,” said Anderson. “This team came into the season, not only with an expectation of executing in a tough conference, but knowing this milestone was sitting within reach. That put a lot of pressure on these guys. I am proud of the heart and determination they have played with this season and am looking forward to seeing how they grow in the coming weeks.

DOBSON — Surry Central overcame a 16-point deficit to defeat North Stokes 88-81 in overtime. Central scored the first two points of the Dec. 4 game, then North Stokes took a lead it didn’t surrender until the final four minutes of the fourth quarter.
Lady Sauras beat rival West Stokes, lose to Reagan
WALNUT COVE — South Stokes beat county-rival West Stokes last Friday 56-32 and then hosted 4A Reagan High School on Tuesday and loss 58-41. The Sauras opened the game against West Stokes with a 6-0 run and led 15-4 after one quarter of play. Rebecca Amos paced South with six points in the period and Sage Stovall had five.
Granite Bears go Back-to-Back
Cheers from Big Oaks Stadium were heard 250 miles away in the Granite City after Walker Stroup converted a field goal with 42 seconds to play. The senior’s second field goal of the evening gave Mount Airy a two-score advantage over Robbinsville in the 1A West Regional Championship, ultimately sealing the team’s 27-16 victory.
Wildcats rebound past Chatham Central, North Surry
KING — Having losing last Friday to rival South Stokes at home, West Stokes boys went on the road to Forsyth County Day on Saturday and beat Chatham Central 62-33, and then returned home on Tuesday against North Surry and won 64-45. The Wildcats started hot in the first quarter with Derek Studer connecting on two three-pointers and a pair of free throws, Keyon Rawley totaling seven points, and leading scorer Cam Edmonds tallying four points to lead 22-14.
Caudle, Edwards pace Elkin past Falcons
EAST BEND — Every time that Forbush cut into Elkin’s lead during Friday night’s home opener, the visiting Buckin’ Elks responded. Those answers resulted in a 53-40 win for Elkin in boy’s basketball action and moved to 3-2 in the early season. The third victory matches its win total from all of last season.
Elkin Swim Team edges out East Surry, Surry Central
PILOT MOUNTAIN — The Elks of Elkin High School swim team competed at the Armfield Civic Center last Wednesday against the Cardinals of East Surry and the Golden Eagles of Surry Central High School. The Lady Elks, already small in number, had four athletes missing due to sickness, but managed to barely edge out East Surry for the victory, winning by one point. Elkin’s men swimmers were able to take the win with a much larger margin, while Surry Central edged out East Surry by two points for second place.

PILOT MOUNTAIN — Surry Central and East Surry competed in their second swim meets of the season on Nov. 29. The two Foothills 2A Conference members took part in nonconference action with Elkin, Starmount and East Wilkes at the Armfield Civic Center.
Mount Airy hosts NW1A Swim Meet
Mount Airy hosted a Northwest 1A Conference swim meet on Nov. 27. Elkin, Starmount and East Wilkes piled into Reeves Community Center for the Monday evening meet, which served as Mount Airy’s second of the season. The Bears previously hosted fellow league teams South Stokes and Alleghany on Nov. 15.
