WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Traffic restrictions began on Monday on Elm Street in West Springfield as progress continues on a Complete Streets project.

This Complete Streets project runs along Elm Street from its intersection with Park Street to Worthen Street, improving traffic flow and safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. Starting Monday, heavy and commercial vehicles will not be allowed on portions of Elm Street or Route 20 near their intersection as the city begins construction on a traffic circle.

The city says those restrictions will likely last through the end of July. The construction will cause delays, so it is being advised to use another route when traveling. There will be no parking allowed around the construction area during the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

West Springfield’s Town Engineer told 22News that as this project reaches its climactic phase, things are getting a little tight for big traffic near the center.

“The work that we are approaching will soon be difficult for larger vehicles to maneuver the corridor without damaging the work we are doing. People should seek alternate routes if they are driving larger vehicles to avoid being redirected by police at this intersection,” said Connor Knightly.

With sidewalks rebuilt on either side of the intersection and drainage improvements ready to be installed, the project moves into its climactic phase now, changing traffic patterns for the rest of us normal-sized traffic very shortly.

The DPW is eyeing completion by the end of September for all of the work in this complete streets project, weather permitting.
