WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — INDOT held a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday in West Lafayette to commemorate a new project to build the state’s very first wireless roadway project.

The ceremony featured INDOT Commissioner Mike Smith, Purdue University President Mung Chiang and Cummins Inc. as they marked the start of a roadway intended to help charge electric heavy-duty and passenger vehicles as they pass through the designated section of roadway on U.S. 52/231 between Cumberland Avenue and Lindberg Road in West Lafayette.

The ceremony was hosted at INDOT’s West Lafayette subdistrict office.

The successful completion of the quarter-mile roadway will bring to fruition a project that began in 2018 as the collaboration focused on assessing the technical and financial variables involved in constructing electric roadways as well as “test bed design and understanding the interaction between the embedded power transfer technology and pavement structure.”

INDOT confirmed that the $11 million project will likely become active for daily use in the spring of 2025.
