    West Haven Man sentenced to 10-years for 2019 burglary, sexual assault

    WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Miguel Cuapio-Mendieta, 26, of West Haven, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for a 2019 burglary and sexual assault.

    Cuapio-Mendieta was arrested on December 29, 2019, following an investigation by the West Haven Police Department. The victim reported that Cuapio-Mendieta, who she worked with, forcibly entered her apartment, threatened her with a handgun, and sexually assaulted her.

    After the assault, the victim received text messages from Cuapio-Mendieta admitting to the assault. He was located in New Haven and led police to where he had stashed the backpack used in the incident, containing incriminating evidence.

    On February 21, 2024, Cuapio-Mendieta pleaded guilty to first-degree aggravated sexual assault and first-degree burglary.

    At the sentencing hearing in Milford Superior Court, the judge imposed a total effective sentence of 20 years, with 10 years served in prison and 10 years of probation.
