Concern is growing in a West Babylon community over a homeless shelter that’s just steps away from a day care.

Both the shelter and the day care are on the property of Our Lady of Grace Church on Albin Avenue.

The shelter is being operated by the Huntington-based Family Service League. The lease term began Nov. 1, 2023, and ends Oct. 31, 2028. It can house up to 40 individuals.

Local elected officials say the shelter took them by surprise, including Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey.

Both are now urging the Family Service League and Suffolk County Social Services to find a new location for the shelter.

Parents at the day care say the church did not give them advance notice about the shelter.

Neighbors report drug use and police activity linked to shelter residents.

A spokesperson for the Family Service League says the organization is willing to work with local officials and the community to find an equitable solution that supports the facility’s residents.

Suffolk County Spokesperson Peter Guaraldi wrote,

“The County is aware of the dispute among the local municipality, service provider and local residents. We are working with all parties to ensure the best mutual outcome that benefits the quality of life for both the residents in the area and the vulnerable residents that receive these services.”

The Diocese of Rockville Centre has declined requests for comment.
