CRESTON— Waynedale's Cade Herman saved the best for last in opening-day action Wednesday at the Norwayne Division III District.

The junior registered a personal-record toss on his final throw of the day for a come-from-behind win in the discus, highlighting a strong day for locals at Norwayne Community Stadium.

Sitting in sixth place coming into his last attempt, two spots shy of regional berth, Herman spun the discus 156-feet-9 to not only solidify a big to next week's meet back in Creston but win the entire meet.

Dalton's Collin Jones was second with a mark of 151-5, while Rittman's Hugo Hawkins locked-up the final regional bid with a fourth-place throw of 144-4. Like Herman, both Jones and Hawkins advanced with career-best marks.

Carson Steiner of Dalton also captured a district championship, soaring over 13-4 in the pole vault on his final try at the height for a personal-best mark. Loudonville's Braden Carr earned a second straight regional trip with a 13-foot jump, good for second.

Rittman's Evan Rastorfer won the long jump, clearing 20-6, while Dalton's Jace Eberly placed third (19-5¾).

In the lone running final on the day, Waynedale's 4x800-meter team of Jackson Varner, Jayden Varner, Conner Reich, Nick St. John took first overall in 8:18.62. Rittman's team also qualified with a third-place 8:22.91.

A host of girls also advanced to regional action next week, highlighted by Rittman's girls 4x8 unit and Northwestern's Jule Stoller each winning events.

The group of Brooke Bowlby, Adyson Fosen, Ryver Ramsier, and Annabelle Snyder ran a season-best 9:33.98 for the win in a little under five seconds, while Stoller cleared 5-1 in the high jump for her first career district crown. Smithville's 4x8 also advanced after a third-place run, while Bowlby and Maddy Kate Wolf of Norwayne finished third and fourth, respectively, in the high jump.

A pair of throwers also moved on as Norwayne's Haley Bittinger (3rd place, 39-2) and Northwestern's Emily Thompson (4th, 39-0¼) qualified.

The remaining field events and running finals will take place Friday, the field starting at 4 p.m., followed by running at 5:30.

    In another district meet:

    North Canton D-I District

A throw of 36-6¾ was enough to get Grace Kostohryz into the finals for the shot put in this district at North Canton Memorial Stadium. The mark was also more than enough to help the Wooster senior earn another regional berth. Kostohryz finished third overall on a day where she landed all six attempts, four of which going well over 36 feet. Both the boys and girls 4x8 relay teams for Wooster just missed advancing to next week’s Austintown Regional. The girls team of Clara Mariola, Margaret McBride, Tristen Shaffer, and Mattie Dunlap was eighth in 11:04.74, while the boys clocked a 8:25.64 with the group of Jack Frichtl, Talen Keys, Oliver Miller, and Jackson Stansifer.
