Fort Atkinson’s baseball team fell 10-2 to Watertown, bouncing back to win 12-9 in the second game, in a Badger Large doubleheader at Jones Park on Saturday.

Fort got off to an encouraging start in the first game, reaching safely in five of its first six at-bats. Braeden Hoth singled and scored on Jackson Leibman’s single. Brogan Bosch, who was hit by a pitch, came around on an error at third base.

The Blackhawks managed just four more hits — all singles — the rest of the way against Eliot Roethle and Owin Walsh. Roethle punched out 11 in five innings, allowing two runs on two hits. Walsh pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh.

Landon Fendt’s three-run triple in the fourth gave the Goslings the lead for good. The visitors tacked on six more runs in the fifth on five hits, including a two-run single by Jacob Hurtgen and two RBI double by Fendt.

Mason Ketterhagen allowed three earned on four hits in four frames in the loss for Fort. A trio of relievers — Leibman, Alexis Martinez and Drew Enger — combined to walk nine hitters and allow seven runs in the final three frames.

The sides combined for 30 hits — 15 apiece — including nine for extra bases in the finale, which Fort never trailed in.

Cam Haagensen and Trent Wilson both singled in runs while Hausen tripled home a pair with a knock to left in Fort’s four-run second. Haagensen, who was 4-for-4, added a run-scoring single in the second.

After Watertown cut its deficit to 4-3 in the third, the Blackhawks (5-9, 3-5 in conference) plated six runs on six hits in the fourth to seize control. Wilson led off the frame with a single, scoring on a single by Hoth. Gavin Kanters helped his own cause with a run-scoring double. Jordan Zahn (double), Haagensen (single) and Martinez (single) added RBI hits to stretch the lead. Kanters also doubled home a run in the fifth to make it 12-4.

The Goslings (6-8, 4-3) scored three times in the fifth but stranded the bases loaded. Watertown had four singles in the seventh, scoring twice, but again left the bases juiced.

Kanters gave up six earned on 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings to pick up the decision. Alex Block got out of the aforementioned jams, tossing 2 1/3 innings to earn the save.

“We had a great opportunity to get some quality wins over a good opponent at home,” Fort baseball coach Andy Schwantes said. “Fortunately we came away with one, but I think we all felt like we could have played better the first game.

“We had a lot of offensive success. I am hoping that carries over to the coming week.”

The Warhawks got their first two runners of the second inning on via errors in the infield before Gilroy’s blast to left-center. Gilroy’s shot in the second to left field upped the Arrowhead lead to 7-0.

Peter Kussow pitched five innings of two-hit ball with 10 strikeouts, three walks for the Warhawks.

Trent Wilson started and tossed four frames for the Blackhawks, allowing seven runs (five earned) on six hits.

“Trent did everything we could have asked of him on the mound, but our defense let him down,” Schwantes said. “The conditions were tough to pitch in to say the least, but he competed every inning.
