After splitting the Capitol - South conference softball title in the regular season, Marshall and Waterloo now turn their attention towards the impending Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) state tournament. Naturally, both teams received high seeds as they both hope to make deep runs.

The Pirates of Waterloo made it all the way to the Division 4 state title game last spring, ultimately falling to champion Iola-Scandinavia. This season, the Pirates went 13-8 overall and 7-1 in conference play with one non-conference opponent remaining on the schedule.

This earned them the No. 2 seed in Sectional 4 of Division 4. Waterloo will open WIAA regional play at home on Tuesday, May 21 against No. 7 seed Williams Bay.

Williams Bay competes in the Trailways - South conference and finished in the middle of the pack at 8-8. The Bulldogs finished the regular season with an overall record of 10-9.

Waterloo took on a pair of Williams Bay's conference opponents during the regular season. The Pirates run-ruled Deerfield 10-0 in five innings and claimed a 9-1 win over Palmyra-Eagle. Both teams swept Williams Bay in the regular season. Deerfield won 15-0 and 11-1 while Palmyra-Eagle won 9-4 and 12-0.

The winner of that regional opener advances to face the winner of No. 3 seed Deerfield and No. 6 seed Cambridge. Waterloo has already beaten both teams this season, the aforementioned 10-0 Deerfield win and victories of 10-2 and 13-3 over Cambridge.

As for Marshall, the Cardinals claimed a regional title last spring before falling to eventual Division 3 state champion Brodhead in the sectional round. This time around, Marshall enters the postseason ranked No. 6 in Division 3 of the Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Association (WFSCA) coaches poll thanks to a 15-5 overall record. This can get even better with a non-conference trip to Laconia remaining on the regular season schedule.

Marshall earned the No. 3 seed in Sectional 3 of Division 3. The Cardinals will open WIAA regional play on Tuesday, May 21 with a home game against No. 6 seed Beloit Turner.

The Trojans of Turner finished in the top half of the Rock Valley conference this spring with a 10-5 record. Overall, they're 11-6 with one non-conference matchup at Milton remaining on the schedule. They shared no common opponents with Marshall during the regular season.

The winner of the Marshall/Turner regional opener will advance to face the winner of No. 2 seed Poynette and No. 7 seed Clinton. Marshall has already clashed with Poynette this spring, a 5-0 road loss way back on Tuesday, April 9.
