When's the last time, if ever, that you saw a zebra in real life? Maybe you've encountered a few on a trip to the zoo. Maybe you went all out and flew to the African savannah to see them on a safari. However, I'd be willing to bet that the last time you spotted a zebra wasn't on your daily commute!

Then again, I'd better rescind that bet, because if your commute takes you down I-90 in western Washington, I might have to eat my words. The lush, tree-lined highway briefly transformed into the savannah on April 28 when a truckful of zebras made a daring escape- and one of them is still on the lam today!

This was a truly wild encounter for drivers on a Washington state highway! Traffic was stopped for four zebras who got loose on I-90. The privately owned zebras had apparently escaped when the driver stopped to secure the trailer.

Traffic was "wild" out on I-90 this Sunday as four zebras made a break for it on the highway, startling commuters in their cars. The reporters at @abc7la weren't far off when they compared it to a " safari ride ." People pay good money to experience this, and these drivers are getting it for free!

According to Seattle's KING 5 News , the great escape happened in North Bend , an area just southwest of Snoqualmie, Washington , and about 30 miles outside of Seattle. A spokesperson told KING 5 that the owner was transporting the zebras to Anaconda, a small city in western Montana, when the driver had to pull over to secure the trailer. Before the driver could lock down the trailer and get back on the road, however, the zebras broke free, galloping off into the nearby neighborhoods.

Drivers and North Bend locals were flabbergasted by the sudden arrival of African wildlife in their small town. Police, wildlife officers, and even rodeo professionals were called in to help corral the escaped wild animals and get them back on the move to Montana. These efforts proved... mostly successful.

    Zebra on the Lam

It's Tuesday afternoon at the time I'm writing this, two days since the zebras first escaped. In that time, three of the zebras have been caught and safely returned to their owners, but one of them is still on the loose!

According to KNDU , the wayward zebra was last sighted in North Bend on Monday, but so far, King County officers still haven't been able to locate and corral the stripey speedster. If officials can't catch him by this evening, the Great Zebra Caper will stretch into its third day!

Animal control officers will continue to patrol the North Bend area until the zebra is found. They're asking anyone in the area who sees the zebra to call 911 but to keep their distance. Approaching the zebra could spook it into running away again, and then the search'll go back to square one!
