Plans of outdoor picnics and barbecues may have to be placed on the back burner this Memorial Day weekend as weather forecasts predict scattered thunderstorms in the Washington area.

    Saturday

On Saturday, thunderstorms are predicted to hit the area in the afternoon, but there is still a chance of a morning shower or storm. The temperature is predicted to be in the low-to-mid 80s thanks to partial and filtered sunshine but could fall to the mid-to-upper 70s once clouds and rainstorms take over.

By the evening, there is still a slight chance of a few more showers and storms. While low temperatures are expected to hover around 65 degrees, the air will be sticky and muggy.

    Sunday

Plans for outings are the safest on Sunday, when there is the lowest chance of rain, but be prepared for a possible late-day storm. Temperatures are expected to be around 85 degrees.

By the evening, it's a coin flip between a slight chance of showers or thunderstorms all night. It will be sticky outside, with temperatures between the mid-60s to low 70s but humidity reaching 80%.

    Monday

The skies are predicted to be gray on Memorial Day, with a wave of showers and downpours throughout the day. There's a higher-than-usual chance for severe storms as some cool air approaches the region. Humidity will be high as temperatures push 80 degrees, but persistent rain all day will bring the temperature down to 70 in the evening.

Rainy weekends are no surprise but are frustrating Beltway residents. For the past five weekends, the Washington area has dealt with wet conditions.

In other parts of the country, conditions could be more severe. Thunderstorms with damaging wind gusts are forecasted on Saturday in parts of Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. By Sunday, thunderstorms will develop across the Midwest.
