Mayor Johnson continues to avoid commenting on calls to oust CTA chief

Mayor Brandon Johnson continued to avoid answering questions about firing CTA chief Dorval Carter on Wednesday, despite City Council introducing a resolution calling for Carter's removal the same day.

Why it matters: The rare move of pressuring a mayor to fire a member of his cabinet represents a growing boldness among alders who also voted this week to compel the mayor to consult them before removing public safety funding.

What happened: Ald. Andre Vasquez (40th) filed the resolution to remove Carter with support from 28 other alders, but, in a parliamentary maneuver, Ald. Jason Ervin (28th) sent it to the rules committee.

Between the lines: The move is widely considered a way to delay legislation because it requires a two-thirds majority to advance it out of the rules committee.

What they're saying: When asked to respond to the resolution, Johnson recited a list recent CTA accomplishments and noted, he doesn't "comment on personnel matters."

The other side: Vasquez said he was undaunted by the maneuver to delay the resolution and that he was confident it would eventually advance to a full council vote.
