WASHBURN — The North Greene Huskies ended their season with a 3-2 loss to the Washburn Pirates in the Region 1-A tournament consolation game on Saturday.

“We had opportunities all day and we did a good job of throwing strikes,” said North Greene coach Jason Lowe, whose Huskies end their season at 16-12.

Elimination games can many times be high-scoring affairs as the teams run out of pitching, but that wasn’t the case in this game.

North Greene pitcher Mason Smith went the distance on the mound. In six innings, he gave up seven hits, walked three and struck out six.

Washburn countered with Matthew Harville, who also went the distance. In seven innings, he gave up seven hits, walked one and struck out eight.

“Mason gave us a chance to win,” Lowe said. “We had plenty of chances today but we just didn’t execute. We gave them that last run. Congratulations to Washburn.”

North Greene scored both its runs in the top of the first inning.

Colton Robbins singled to center field, took second on a fielder’s choice and scored on a two-out RBI single to right by Owen Pierce.

Jake Duffy, who had reached on the fielder’s choice, took third on the throw home and scored when Don Stansfield reached on an infield hit.

Washburn pulled within 2-1 on an RBI single by Bryson Coffman in the bottom of the second.

North Greene loaded the bases in the top of the fourth but couldn’t score. With two out, Tyler Britton walked, Jaiden Bailey reached on an error and Isaac Gaby singled to load the bases before Harville got Robbins to look at a called strike three to end the threat.

Washburn tied the game 2-2 in the fifth. Riley Munsey reached on a one-out single to left, took third on an error and scored on a passed ball.

The Pirates made it 3-2 in the sixth. Ayden Davis walked, took second on a sacrifice bunt by Coffman and scored on an error.

Harville then sat down the Huskies in order in the seventh, striking out two.

Gaby finished 2-for-4 for North Greene. Britton had a double, and Robbins, Adam Weir, Pierce and Stansfield each had a hit.
