Russell and Flatau highlight Bluejays at Big South Conference Meet

Thursday evening, the Waseca Bluejays track and field team traveled to Fairmont to compete in the rescheduled Big South Conference Meet. With top finishes in a multitude of events, the Waseca girls team finished fourth in the conference with 120 points while the boys finished fifth with 87.

Highlights for the girls began with Gabriela Lopez claiming the conference title in the 100 meter dash with a PR time of 12.98. In the 100 m hurdles, Brooklyn Flatau claimed the conference title with a time of 15.33.

Bella Wikan then claimed the conference championship in the 300m hurdles with a PR time of 48.45 followed closely by Flatau with a time of 49.81 to finish second.

The 4x800m relay team of Evelyn O’Brien, Maren Schimming, Reese Rodriguez and Kelsey Draeger finished third with a time of 11:13.83.

Kalea Sartori claimed first in the shot put with a top throw of 36 feet and two inches before earning the championship in the discus with a top mark of 105’1”. Flatau closed out her excellent day with a conference title in the long jump after posting a PR mark of 17’4.25”.

Boys highlights began with Damarius Russell claiming the conference title in the 100m dash with a PR time of 10.93. In the 200m dash, Russell finished second with a season-best time of 22.25 and in the 800m run, Isaac Feldkamp finished third with a PR time of 2:05.17.

The 4x100m relay squad of Bennett Ludwig, Jordan Johnston, Jett Rohl and Kaeden Johnson finished third with a time of 44.35. William Mansfield finished first in the pole vault with a clear of 13’5” and in the long jump, Russell earned the conference title with a season-best mark of 21’25”.

This meet marks the final tune-up for the Bluejays ahead of day one of the Section 1AA Championships. The Section meet will be held at Faribault’s Bruce Smith Field Thursday, May 30, and Saturday, June 1.
