COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) — Two people are dead, and two are left injured after a high-speed crash on I-95 Sunday morning.

Two vehicles were traveling north on I-95 near mile marker 55 when they collided at the Beach Road overpass in Walterboro, according to Colleton County Fire-Rescue.

As a result, a Chevy Malibu left the roadway, went down an embankment, uprooted a large tree, hit a second tree, and then overturned. Sometime during these events, the engine was ejected from the car and caught on fire, CCFR reported.

Both occupants in the Malibu were pronounced deceased and later determined to be a couple from New York.

A minivan was also in the collision, and both of its occupants suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The pair also refused ambulance transport.

Crews with Colleton Fire used various tools to free the deceased New York from the trapped wreckage, and the Colleton County Coroner’s Office transported the pair. The collision left this section of I-95 down to one lane for three hours and backed up for several miles, Colleton Fire said.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating this collision.
