WALLINGFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — A man has died in a single-car crash in Wallingford Monday night, according to the driver’s family.

The driver was traveling down Route 68 in a 2007 Ford Econoline van around 6:45 p.m. when shortly after lost control, he crashed into a sign and two utility poles, snapping them in half, before flipping into a nearby tree.

The vehicle came to rest just inches from a residential property.

The driver was identified as 65-year-old Michael Beauvais of Wallingford. He was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital.

The impact of the collision also brought down live wires onto Route 68, leading to power outages in the surrounding neighborhood.

The video below is from News 8 at 11 p.m. on May 6.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with loud sounds resembling an earthquake.

“Horn just laying on it and then what sounded like an earthquake,” said Chris Nieves, an eyewitness. “It was just a rumble and boom, and I had no idea.”

Some witnesses suggested that the driver may have been traveling on the wrong side of the road before losing control.

“The guy was coming down the street traveling on the wrong side of the road,” said Angelique Keenelifogg, works in the area.

Authorities are currently investigating the possibility of a medical emergency contributing to the crash. Updates on the driver’s condition are awaited as investigations continue.
