Ever Tried A Real Hawaiian Plate Lunch? These 7 Washington Spots Serve Huge Ones
A true Hawaiian plate lunch is simple math: two scoops of white rice, a scoop of creamy macaroni salad, and a pile of meat like kalua pork, teriyaki chicken, or crispy katsu. It grew out of the lunch breaks of plantation workers in Hawaii, and today it is one of the most filling meals you can buy for the price.

Boots Bakery & Lounge’s owner shares how a craving for better vegan treats turned into a 14-year-old Spokane staple
Alison Collins never set out to open a bakery, let alone one that would become a destination for vegan and gluten-free food in Spokane. While working behind the bar at Mizuna, where she became known for her creative cocktails, Collins began making vegan desserts for the restaurant’s menu. Soon, customers were coming back for treats they couldn’t find anywhere else in town. What started as a few desserts grew beyond her home kitchen, and with support from friends, loyal customers and community members, Boots Bakery & Lounge opened downtown in 2012. She originally imagined Boots as a small café serving pastries, a few vegan dishes and cocktails. But demand reshaped the business into a fully gluten-free, vegan gathering place built around food, connection and community.

Save the date for some of the region’s biggest annual celebrations of craft brewing
According to the national Brewers Association, Washington ranks fourth among U.S. states with its 438 craft breweries. And although Idaho comes in at No. 31 with a total of 99 craft breweries, it’s 10th on a per-capita basis for having 6.8 breweries per 100,000 adults age 21 and older. Symphony Review: Lowe, Bailey bring ‘Americana’ into focus on the Fox stage
Three of the works on the program – William Grant Still’s “Mother and Child” and Aaron Copland’s “Variations on a Shaker Melody” and the “Suite from ‘Billy the Kid’ ” – were composed in the years 1938-44. This was a period of intense social and political ferment in the United States, caused by the protracted suffering of the Great Depression and the emergence of fascist authoritarian regimes in Europe. At all levels of American society, established norms were called into question, and alternatives – sometimes radical alternatives, including both communism and fascism – earnestly considered. Artists were in the forefront of these activities, with musicians as diverse as Marian Anderson, Paul Robeson and Woody Guthrie using their art to focus attention on racism, inequality and the harmful effects of unbridled capitalism.

Taste Budz Review: Gordo’s Cantina Mexican Restaurant
Chewelah keeps on growing, and there is now an awesome new Mexican restaurant, Gordo’s Cantina. Zack and I both ordered chef favorite items. I got the Tacos Placeros. They fill slightly toasted tortillas with tender, juicy chunks of beef cheek. Then, they’re topped off with cilantro, white onions, and pickled red onions. The meat was so tender it seemed to melt in my mouth. The combination of salty, savory meat and acidic pickled onion struck the perfect balance. The tacos are only $10 for three, but you can upgrade and add rice and beans for $5 more. I got mine with Rancho beans. The rice was flavorful and had a good texture.

Why Spokane Folks Keep Returning To Frank’s Diner, A Restored 1906 Railroad Car
Plenty of restaurants claim to have character, but very few can say their dining room once had wheels. In downtown Spokane, one breakfast spot does its business inside a railroad car built in 1906, long before most of the city’s current buildings existed. Today that car sits parked for...
