WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- $1 million from donors has been raised towards a new cardiac catheterization laboratory at Providence St. Mary Medical Center.

The Providence health care system will also provide a matching investment. The recent Providence St. Mary Foundation Cardiac Care Campaign will cover costs of the renovation like the care room or imaging equipment.

The cardiac catheterization lab or "cath lab", is used when a patient has a heart attack, for diagnostic treatment, pacemaker insertion or other heart and vascular procedures.

“The generosity of Providence St. Mary Foundation donors has not only funded cutting-edge equipment, but demonstrated our Mission to serve this community in the same way the Sisters of Providence did more than a century ago,” said Lacey Perry, chief philanthropy officer for the foundation. “Significant investments from Providence and hundreds of Providence St. Mary Foundation donors speaks to the power of collective action, community and the unwavering belief in exceptional care, close to home.”

Providence St. Mary Foundation said heart disease is the #1 cause of death in the region and the cath lab serves eight counties.

The new cardiac catheterization laboratory is expected to be finished by the end of the year.
