Coshocton County voters say yes to all but one levy during general election

COSHOCTON − Voters in Coshocton County showed their support for local property tax levies with only one, an additional for Clark Township, failing in the Nov. 3 general election. There were two countywide levies on the ballot. Those were renewals for the Coshocton County District Library and Coshocton County Emergency Medical Services. Both passed in unofficial vote totals from the Coshocton County Board of Elections. The EMS levy had 6,792 votes for it and 4,882 votes against it. The library levy had 6,761 votes for it and 4,870 votes against it. Library levy The library was seeking renewal of a 0.5-mills levy for five years for current expenses that was estimated to generate $400,237 per year and cost the owner of a $100,000 home $12 annually. This levy is responsible for about 20% of the library's annual revenue. The library system has approximately 36 employees and a monthly operating budget from $125,000 to $200,000. Director Jennifer Austin said this will allow the library system to maintain staffing levels and continuing providing various services. This includes not only the physical collection, but various digital services. Austin said mobile printing has been popular. That was made possible through levy funding, she said.

Asbestos cost dispute leads Coshocton land bank to change contractors

COSHOCTON − The Coshocton County land bank is moving asbestos removal work on two demolition projects to a different contractor after obtaining estimates that could save more than $26,000, prompting a dispute with the company originally awarded the jobs. The work will be completed with funding from the Ohio Department of Development. At its August meeting, the land bank awarded seven demolition projects to Land Clearing Specialists. The company later hired Aster Oilfield Services of Bellaire as a subcontractor for the work. More: Land bank reviews bids for 10 property demolitions across Coshocton Co. Aster came back with a change order for three structures related to asbestos removal. Asbestos work estimates were $21,440 for 55668 Township Road 154, $13,246 for 28099 County Road 12 and $12,944 for 28009 Township Road 281. Tiffany Swigert, director of the Coshocton Port Authority and land bank board member, said the size of the asbestos change orders prompted the land bank to seek a second opinion. Estimates from Ohio Technical Services were $6,200 for Township Road 154 and $2,400 for County Road 12. The company has not issued an estimate for Township Road 281 yet.
