Football isn't Andale's only fall powerhouse. Meet its newest state champions
At Andale, fall state championships in boys sports have become almost synonymous with football, a program that has made winning titles look routine. But on Saturday, another group of Andale boys had a championship of their own to celebrate. The Andale boys cross country team won the first state championship in program history Saturday at Wamego Country Club, edging defending Class 4A champion Wamego by just three points, 62-65, in a thrilling finish. Competing against schools like, Washburn Rural, Lawrence Free State, Derby, Maize, Lawrence High, and others, the Redskins knew they were going to have to run their best performances of the season to be in the mix of the 3 teams and first 15 individual runners to cross the finish line, to get a chance at the State Meet in Lawrence. These gritty, never say die, runners did not disappoint, as several of the individuals ran their best times of the season, but still came up short.
