WACO, Texas ( FOX 44 ) — The Baylor Bears wrapped up spring practice in an unorthodox format, shifting to an open practice before weather forced the Bears inside and closed off the practice to everyone but media, recruits and immediate family on Saturday morning.

The format is likely to stay according to Dave Aranda, for three reasons:

  • Avoiding injuries.
  • Not allowing teams to watch the broadcast & poach via transfer portal.
  • Keeping new offense/defense schemes under wraps.

The practice featured loads of competition among position groups vying for snaps come the regular season in the fall.

The wide receiver group drew plenty of interest with many different pieces standing out, including Texas State transfer Ashtyn Hawkins.

Dave Aranda told media that a decision for quarterback hasn’t been made and they’ll evaluate the contenders in the coming weeks. He also noted that they are prepared in case any of his players want to hit the portal following those ‘honest’ discussions.

Baylor now heads into the offseason looking to continue its momentum into the summer as they prepare for the season opener on Saturday, August 31st against Tarleton State.
