Kahalu‘u Bay in Kona is considered the best spot in West Hawai‘i to safely teach a beginner how to surf. Surfers aren’t forced to navigate boulders and the reef, which are commonly found at Big Island beaches, said Tifani Stegehuis, owner of Hawai‘i Lifeguard Surf Instructors. The easy access from the road to the water also makes it a great location.

The Hilo Vikings made their mark at the 2023 Fall State Championships, with team members earning recognition for their performances. Kekaihulali Halpern was a standout, winning the Girls Individual race at the Honolulu Marathon Cross Country Championships.

Carlos Ramsey Jr., a player for the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo men's basketball team, has received the title of PacWest Player of the Week. He earned this recognition after an overtime win against the Chaminade Silverswords on November 16. In that game, Ramsey Jr. scored 31 points, a personal best, helping his team to a 90-86 victory.

Six University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo female soccer players have been acknowledged for their performances this season. These are Teani Arakawa, Jazlynn Ellis, Phoebe Barnes, Megan Donovan, Filippa Graneld, and Alyssa Padron. Arakawa, the PacWest Preseason Player of the Year, retained her title and was named the PacWest Player of the Week twice. She scored seven goals in September, ending the season with the conference's highest number of goals and points.
