Cottonport Drowns In Record 24-Hour Deluge As New Orleans Takes A Soaking
Source: Facebook/US National Weather Service Lake Charles Louisiana. Twenty-nine inches of rain in a day is not a typo. A rain gauge three miles southeast of Cottonport clocked 29.06 inches in a 24-hour stretch on Thursday, a total meteorologists say sets a new Louisiana state record. The torrent, tied to the lingering remnants of Tropical Storm Arthur, swamped low-lying roads and left parts of central Louisiana literally standing in water. National Weather Service staff and the Louisiana state climatologist inspected the volunteer CoCoRaHS gauge in person and confirmed the reading, while NOAA’s climate archives will handle the final verification. Down the road in New Orleans, the airport still managed to pile up more than eight inches during the same event.

The Weather Channel Meteorologist Justin Michaels reports from Lake Charles - 6/17/26
Lake Charles, Louisiana, finds itself in a tropical cone, and that is not something people take lightly here. There are still people coming back after Laura nearly six years ago. Think about that. Six years of storm recovery for some folks, and you will still drive around Lake Charles and see blue tarps. Insurance issues, construction delays, on and so forth all add up to a long time of disaster recovery. Laura being a category four hurricane, what's going to come through here over the next several days is nothing close to that. But still, when Lake Charles is in a cone, people pay attention. We're expecting the expecting the potential for rain. Of course, could be flooding rain if any of those cells just sit and dump over Lake Charles. Also potential for wind. Is it going to be tropical storm force? Not likely. But remember, just because a cone comes over your area doesn't mean you're the only area having impacts. There will be impacts far outside of the cone as this eventually comes ashore in Lake Charles, Louisiana. I'm Justin Michaels, the Weather Channel.
