Foothill basketball's 'unsung hero' leads playoff charge, sets up rival rematch
The Foothill boys basketball team has shown time and time again that when things get intense, they rise to the top. The Cougars (15-12) did it over the past few weeks against Shasta, Pleasant Valley and Enterprise as they fought their way to the No. 2 seed heading into the postseason. It only makes sense that when the Cougars faced Red Bluff in the first round of the Division III Northern Section playoffs on Friday, Feb. 20, the third matchup between the two schools this season, Foothill ran away with an early lead and held it until the 65-45 final score was cemented in the books. Over the past few weeks, the Cougars have relied on guards Matt Poulsen and Turner Knowles to take care of the scoring. Senior forward Wyatt Forward has also sprinkled in some dynamic performances. On Friday night, it was the team’s “unsung hero,” Caiden Cochran, who carved up the Spartans (7-22) for a game-high 20 points in the win. “(Cochran) has just been that unsung hero all year,” head coach John Carter said. “He shows up every day. He works his tail off every day. You couldn’t ask for a better kid, and I saw

Shasta supervisor plans new Redding school, seeks section membership
Shasta County Supervisor Kevin Crye has plans to establish a school in Redding that an application says could have up to 200 students enrolled by its third year of operation. Crye’s Northbound Academy applied for membership in the CIF Northern Section , the athletic governing body that high schools in Shasta and surrounding North State counties compete under. The school’s application for admittance was on the Northern Section Board of Managers Feb. 4 meeting agenda. The application for Achor Point, a new school in Weed, also was on the same agenda. Northern Section Commissioner Scott Johnson said the board took no action and the item was tabled to the board’s April 22 meeting because more information was needed for the board to act. The April meeting will be held at the Shasta Union High School District office on Eureka Way in Redding. Reached by text message, Crye, who represents the county’s 1st District and is running for reelection in June, deflected commenting about his plans to start a new school, and instead told a Record Searchlight reporter to report on stories that matter to the community. On the Northern Section application form, Crye lists projected enrollment for the school at

West Valley students walk out, protest decision not to rehire football coach
Several hundred students and parents showed their support for rehiring former West Valley High School head football coach Greg Grandell on Friday, Feb. 13. The students walked out of classes after third period ended at 10:58 a.m. and gathered next to the school’s football field to protest Wednesday’s unanimous decision by the Anderson Union High School District Board of Trustees not to rehire Grandell for the 2026 football season. Many of the students and parents held flyers that read, “Free Coach Grandell” and “We want Grandell back.” Grandell served as the Eagles’ head football coach for 27 years from 1993 to 2020 and became the second-winningest head coach in Northern Section history after leading the team to 200 wins. However, his departure from the program in 2020 came about due to a hazing scandal. A lawsuit was filed in 2021 against both the high school district and Grandell that alleged there was a “longstanding tradition of hazing, bullying, intimidation, harassment and physical assault” within the program under his leadership. Grandell’s critics and supporters spoke out at the AUHSD meeting prior to the board’s 5-0 vote not to rehire the coach, who served as an assistant coach last year for the

West Valley football looks to rehire Greg Grandell as head coach
The Anderson Union High School District Board of Trustees will vote on whether it will rehire Greg Grandell as West Valley's next head football coach during its regular session on Wednesday, Feb. 11 . Grandell's name appears in the Feb. 11 agenda under consent items and can be found in the Human Resources Report . There is no discussion on consent items unless a member of the board, staff or public requests specific items be discussed or removed from the agenda. Grandell served as the head coach of the Eagles for 27 years from 1993 to 2020 and won 200 games with the program to become the second-winningest head coach in Northern Section history. Grandell won Northern Section Coach of the Year in 2018, the same year the Eagles won the Division III NSCIF title. West Valley won a total of three section championships and nine league titles during Grandell’s tenure. While Grandell established himself as one of the greatest coaches in Northern Section history, his exit from the West Valley program in 2020 was plagued by scandal.
