    Area Roundup: Silverado beats Indio to reach 2nd round of CIF-SS Div. 7 baseball playoffs

    Jace Weiss didn’t allow a hit over six innings to help send the Silverado baseball team to the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 7 playoffs on Friday afternoon.

    Weiss, who is also Silverado’s starting quarterback, struck out eight batters and was charged with four walks as the Hawks beat Indio 14-2. Weiss also had a big day at the plate going 2 for 3 with a RBI and three runs.

    He also got things going offensively in the third inning with a triple, and then quickly scored on a single from Uriel Martin.

    Brandon Chavez followed that up with a double, putting two runners in scoring position. Three batters later, Jayden Pauling singled up the middle to score Martin and Chavez to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead.

    Silverado tacked on five more runs in the fourth inning, and then four more in the fifth.

    CIF-SS Baseball Playoffs Roundup: Oak Hills beats Barstow in an showdown of local teams

    Martin ended 3 for 4 with two RBIs, three runs and a stolen base; Chavez went 2 for 4 with a RBI and two runs; Colin Murphy went 2 for 4 with a RBI; Pauling went 2 for 4 with two RBIs; and Nicholas Padilla went 2 for 3 with a RBI and two runs.

    Silverado is on the road for the second round Tuesday against Oxford Academy, which beat Western Christian 7-1.

    Apple Valley’s Fonville, ACE’s Carlson and Granite Hills Schwartz capture league titles

    At Apple Valley, Brady Fonville led all shooters over two days at the Mojave River League Finals, hosted by Apple Valley Golf Course.

    Fonville carded a score of 66 on May 1, giving him a two-day total of 134. Over the two days, Fonville bogeyed just one hole. Apple Valley’s Brody Earnest finished in second place with a score of 138 after shooting a 67 on the second day of the finals.

    The teammates will represent Apple Valley in the CIF-Southern Section Individual Regionals Central Division, hosted by Bear Valley Country Club on Monday.

    Hesperia’s Sullivan Kilkenny took third place at 145, followed by teammates Luke Hallett at 153 and Brady McColm at 154. The trio will be joining Earnest and Fonville at the tournament on Monday.

    Apple Valley Golf Course also hosted the Cross Valley League Finals the same day. Academy of Careers & Exploration’s Nate Carlson led the way with a two-day total of 133. He shot a 66 on Tuesday, the first day, and then a 67 on Wednesday.

    Carlson is one of three golfers from ACE who is moving on to Monday’s tournament. He is joined by teammates Cody Grounds (149) and Bryce Johnson (153). Big Bear’s Jonathan Hoak rounded out the top-4 qualifiers for the CVL with a score of 169.

    On Thursday, Tristan Schwartz shot a 92 at the Desert Sky League Finals, hosted by Hesperia Country Club.

    Schwartz will be joined at Monday’s tournament by Silverado’s Ian Marquez, Victor Valley’s Isaac Cibrian and teammate Connor Faber, who rounded up the top-4.

    Silverado’s Maust has strong showing in the CIF-SS Finals

    At Walnut, Isabel Maust took second place in the 200-yard freestyle race at the CIF-Southern Section Division 4 Finals on Thursday afternoon with a time of 1:58.07.

    Maust shaved nearly two seconds off her time recorded two days earlier at the CIF-SS Prelims. Ambassador Christian’s Isabella Chavez took first place in the race with a mark of 1:55.55.

    Maust, a sophomore, also came in fifth place in the 100-yard butterfly race, posting a time of 1:02.65.

    Maust also swam in two relay races at the Finals. Swimming with Evelyn Carrillo, Ellie Valadez and Isabella Gollihar in the 200-yard freestyle relay, the team finished in 13th place with a time of 1:52.74.

    In the 400-yard freestyle relay race with Jilian Langel-Viveros, Carrillo and Gollihar, they took seventh with a time of 4:06.74, which is nearly four seconds better than their mark set at the Prelims.

    Apple Valley’s Jolene Caballero also qualified for the Finals taking17th place in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:36.02.

    In boys action, a pair of local swimmers took seventh place in their races. Silverado’s Tommy Fernandez, a freshman, posted a mark of 5:07.22 in the 500-yard freestyle, while Cobalt Institute of Math & Science Academy’s Maximus Hernandez had a time of 1:51.58 in the 200-yard freestyle race.

    Hernandez, the lone representative from CIMS, also took 10th place in the 100-yard butterfly with a mark of 56.33 seconds.

    In the 200-yard individual medley, Fernandez took 11th place with a time of 2:08.74. Fernandez also participated in the 400-yard freestyle relay, with Jeremy Kim, Cameron McIlory and John Michael Holquin, and posted a time of 3:40, which was good for 15th place.

    Kim also took 14th place in the 100-yard butterfly with a mark of 58.23 seconds.

    Prep Tennis

    Oak Hills 15, Colton 3

    At Colton, the Bulldogs are moving on to the quarterfinals of the CIF-Southern Section Division 6 playoffs.

    The No. 1 seed in the division got sweeps in singles action from Isaac Tovar, along with the doubles teams of Josue Soto and Kanoah Pascua, and Hayden Christensen and Angel Guzman.

    Oak Hills (17-0) will be home for the quarterfinals Monday afternoon against Orange Vista, which beat Citrus Hill 11-7.

    Tovar 6-1, 6-1, 6-0; Amato 7-6 (3), 3-6, 1-6; Behrends 4-6, 6-4; Holstrom 6-0.

    Velasco-Gonzalez 6-3, 6-0; Gonzalez-Pinto 6-0; Soto-Pascua 6-1, 6-3, 6-3; Christensen-Guzman 6-0, 6-3, 6-1.

    Silverado 10, Patriot 8

    At Victorville, the Hawks got sweeps in singles action from Christian Sauceda (6-0, 6-1, 6-0) and Ricardo Lemuz (6-3, 6-1, 6-2) in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 5 playoffs on May 1.

    “Close match. We jumped to a 5-1 lead in the first round which made the difference in defeating a well-coached team. Singles carried the load,” said head coach Bill Mocharnuk.

    But the Hawks lost 18-0 to South Hills in the second round on Friday afternoon, ending their season with an 18-3-1 overall record.

    Granite Hills 9 (81), Vista Del Lago 9 (68)

    At Moreno Valley, the Cougars squeezed out a tiebreaker victory on the road in the first round of CIF-SS Division 6 playoffs on May 1.

    Granite Hills got sweeps in singles action from Eric Poindexter (6-1, 6-0, 6-0), as well as the doubles team of Erick Valdovinos and Zaret Ochoa (6-2, 6-4, 6-1).

    But the Cougars’ season came to an end in the second round with an 11-7 loss to Rosemead, the No. 2 seed in the division.

    Granite Hills ends the season with an overall record of 15-7.
