The Silverado swimming team had a strong showing at the CIF-Southern Section Division 4 prelims on Tuesday afternoon, with Isabel Maust leading the way.

Maust, a sophomore, qualified for the CIF-SS Finals in all four events that she participated in, including two individual races at Mt. San Antonio College’s aquatics center.

Maust took third place in the girls 200-yard freestyle race with a mark of 2:00.25, and then posted a time of 1:02.29, which was good for fifth place, in the 100-yard butterfly.

"The task of the moment is never too big for her," Silverado head coach Laura Gonzales said. "She had a special talent for finding the wall. What you see from her in competition is only a fraction of the work she puts in practice."

Maust, who earlier this season was voted the Victorville Chevrolet Athlete of the Week, also swam legs on two relay teams for the Hawks.

Swimming with Jilian Langel-Viveros, Evelyn Carrillo and Isabella Gollihar in the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Hawks took eighth place with a time of 4:10.93. In the 200-freestyle relay, Maust, Evelyn Carillo, Gollihar and Ellie Valadez came in 12th place with a time of 1:53.09.

Jolene Caballero, a sophomore from Apple Valley, is also heading to the finals after taking 17th place in the 200-yard individual medley with a mark of 2:35.25.

In boys action, Tommy Fernandez qualified for Thursday’s finals in two events. The freshman took sixth place in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:05.87, and 16th place in the 200-yard individual medley, posting a mark of 2:13.21.

"It is just beginning for Tommy, as a freshman to be coming back for the finals is impressive. The best is yet to come," Gonzales said.

Fernandez also swam a leg on the 200-yard medley relay team, along with Jeremy Kim, Blake Gonzales, Cameron McIlroy. The team finished in 20th place with a mark of 1:54.33, and is an alternate for the finals.

Kim, a senior, qualified in the 100-yard butterfly as he took 16th place with a mark of 59.37.

"The team works exceptionally hard, and is dedicated," Gonzales said. "They have shown up for each other all year and we are so proud of them."

Maximus Hernandez, a senior from Cobalt Institute of Math & Science Academy, also qualified in two events. He took ninth place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:54.23, and also 13th place in the 100-yard butterfly with a mark of 57.66 seconds.

The CIF-SS Division 4 Finals are set for 4 p.m. on Thursday.
