New community walking opportunity at the MEC begins Monday

As the cold and winter months approach, the Pocatello community needed a new place to walk. After Pine Ridge Mall closed to the public for renovations, many residents lost their usual walking spot, and the Mountain View Event Center, or MEC, wants to change that. Starting Monday, Nov. 2, the MEC, located at 1567 Way to Grace Ave., will host Walk in the ICCU Fieldhouse from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. There is no daily fee. The only cost is a $25 annual fee. “Now that we’ve got the expanded ICCU Fieldhouse, we thought the morning time would work great,” MEC executive director Shelton Robinson said. “We’ll be able to have a dedicated space for the walking. It’s something we’ve thought about for a long time, and now we have that extra space to provide that for our community.” The program is intended primarily for the colder months, though MEC may continue it into warmer weather if demand remains. Walking may be unavailable on some Fridays because of larger events at the facility, and MEC said it will publicize any schedule changes. Large scale Billiards tournament begins In Pocatello on Tuesday

Pocatello is trying to win back its reputation as a billiards town, with a five-day tournament aimed at filling the city’s quiet fall season. The tournament runs Tuesday, Nov. 3, through Saturday, Nov. 7, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day at the Avenue Event Center, the event space attached to the Museum of Clean. The prize pool is up to $30,000 with an $80 entry fee. “We used to have quite a reputation for being a pool town and having lots of billiards tournaments,” said Jeff Glissendorf, director of tourism for Visit Pocatello Chubbuck. “We were a billiards hub, so they wanted to kind of get that back.” Glissendorf said the event also is meant to bring visitors to town after the busy summer months. “We were looking to bring in different kinds of events, cornhole, those kinds of things, and billiards in the off season,” he said. Play will include 8-ball, 9-ball, 10-ball and Scotch doubles across nine brackets, with platinum and standard divisions for different skill levels. The main 8-ball tournament starts Friday, Nov. 6, and wraps up Saturday night. Diamond Billiards is supplying 40 tables. Professional trick-shot artist and Billiards Hall of Fame member Tom

Three Idahoans dead including local resident as flu season arrives weeks early

Flu season is off to an early and deadly start in Southeast Idaho and throughout the Gem State. A Bingham County resident older than 75 has died of influenza-related illness, the first flu death of the 2026-27 season in the region, Southeastern Idaho Public Health announced Thursday. That’s about six weeks earlier than last season, when Southeast Idaho’s first flu death wasn’t reported until Dec. 12, 2025. In that case, a man in his 50s died of an influenza-related illness, which at the time was Idaho’s second flu-related death of the season, according to Southeastern Idaho Public Health. This season’s death is already Idaho’s third, according to Southeastern Idaho Public Health. Last season, the state didn’t record its third flu-related death until Dec. 24, 2025, when a Boise-area woman in her 90s died. This year, the state’s first flu death was reported last week. An Owyhee County man older than 65 was Idaho’s first reported influenza-related death of the 2026-27 season and an Elmore County resident in their 80s became the second. State health officials have also seen signs of an early surge. Idaho emergency department and urgent care visits related to influenza were higher during the past two weeks

Idaho's election chief sounds alarm on Prop 1 money, AI standoff and says human error worries him most

POCATELLO — Idaho’s campaign finance laws weren’t built for this much Prop 1 money, the state’s top election official says. Secretary of State Phil McGrane said the rules didn’t anticipate the scale or sophistication of the fight over the abortion-rights initiative, and that the state needs to rewrite them. His office’s campaign finance team is small, he said, and fines top out at $2,500. In an interview with the Idaho State Journal days before the election, he also talked about AI deception that hasn’t arrived and the one thing that worries him most — human error. A Republican seeking a second term Nov. 3, McGrane also didn’t shy from making it clear he’s also on the ballot. “I’m the state’s partisan chief election officer. I’m an elected Republican,” McGrane said. “I’m also up for election.” It’s a distinction McGrane drew when asked how he balances his political role with running elections, because his job asks voters to trust the process even when they don’t trust each other. McGrane, who was born in Pocatello, returned to Idaho State University last week for the Idaho Civic Hope Project, a community event built around civil conversation across political lines. Pocatello’s Center Street underpass, Benton Street bridge on track to reopen by year’s end

POCATELLO — Construction on the Center Street underpass and the Portneuf River bridge on West Benton Street is moving forward, with traffic access expected to be restored at the bridge in mid-November and at the underpass by the end of the year, according to a news release from the city of Pocatello. The Center Street Underpass Project has reached a new phase in construction. Crews have installed pile shoring that will provide temporary structural support along the northeast and northwest side of the underpass. Crews are currently working to pour concrete for the foundation footings and lower walls in these areas. This project also includes several improvements such as construction of new retaining walls, upgrading sidewalks and the installation of a pedestrian bridge along the west side of the underpass. The work continues to go steadily despite the difficulties of working under a railroad. The funding for this project is $11,230,135 and comes from a variety of sources. Rep. Mike Simpson provided $5.7 million in federal funding. The rest was provided by the Local Highway Technical Assistance Council, and the city of Pocatello provided a 7.34 percent local match.
