Vicksburg City Clerk Deborah Nickson said Monday only 20 affidavit ballots stand between last week’s special election to fill the city’s vacant Ward 1 alderman seat and naming the two candidates who will appear in the May 30 runoff.

With all precincts counted, including absentee ballots, last week’s election did not yield any candidate with the more-than-50-percent of votes needed to win the election outright; however, Thomas “T.J.” Mayfield was the undisputed leader with 538 (42 percent). While Mayfield has earned his spot in the runoff, his opponent remains a close decision between candidates Daryl Hollingsworth, who received 163 votes, and Kevin L. Winters Sr., who finished with 156 votes.

Nickson said a final and official ballot count will be done by Wednesday, when the election results must be certified.

Mayfield and either Hollingsworth or Winters will appear on the ballot in a runoff Thursday, May 30.
