    Thursday's CIF-SS playoff roundup: 13 area teams move on to the next round

    In a busy day for the CIF-Southern Section playoffs, five area high school baseball teams, seven softball teams, and one girls lacrosse team prevailed in postseason openers on Thursday.

    BASEBALL

    Dylan Volantis allowed two hits and struck out 10 over six shutout innings as top-seeded Westlake routed visiting Mira Costa 10-1 in the first round of the Division 2 playoffs. Nolan Johnson went 3 for 3 with five RBIs and two runs scored, Kaden Youmans went 3 for 3 with four runs scored, and Will Kaczyinski was 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs. Westlake (25-4) will visit West Torrance in Tuesday’s second round.

    Michael Leddy was 3 for 4 with three runs scored and AJ Mai was 2 for 4 with two RBIs as Moorpark handled host Crescenta Valley, 7-1, in the Division 2 first round. Carson Cerny and Cameron Johnson combined to allow just the lone unearned run for Moorpark (16-10-1), which will visit Valencia in Tuesday’s second round.

    Landon Adair went 2 for 6 with two RBIs, but Simi Valley let the lead slip away in the bottom of the seventh and ninth innings before host Newhall-Hart won the game, 5-4, with a sacrifice fly in the 14th inning in a Division 2 first-round game. Diejo Barajas, Jackson Goshorn, Raul Centeno and Kyle Casey combined to allow just four earned runs over 14 innings for Simi Valley (14-12-1).

    Zach Strickland struck out 17 in a two hit-shutout to lead Maranatha to a 4-0 victory over Royal in a Division 2 first-round game. The Highlanders ended their season at 16-13.

    Boston Bateman and Nick Tostado combined to throw a two-hit shutout to lift Camarillo to a 9-0 win over visiting Dos Pueblos in a Division 4 first-round game. Bateman struck out eight over 5.1 innings. Trotter Enright was 1 for 2 with two walks and four runs scored to pace the lineup. Bateman, Tostado, Tommy Goodin and Troy Arenzana all had two hits apiece for Camarillo (21-3), which will visit Murrieta Valley in Tuesday’s second round.

    Jacob Roa threw a two-hit shutout, throwing 53 of his 85 pitched for strikes, as Rio Mesa beat visiting Highland 10-0 in a Division 4 first-round game. Josh Cardenas went 2 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs scored, Tommy Castaneda was 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Hunter Cervantes was 2 for 4 with two runs scored for the Spartans (18-10-1), who will travel to Ontario Christian in Tuesday’s second round.

    Jason Del La Paz drove in Max Peters for the eventual game-winning run with two outs in the top of the eighth inning and combined with Byrd for 3.1 innings of shutout relief as St. Bonaventure beat host Mayfair 3-2 in extra innings in a Division 5 first-round game. De La Paz and Peters were both 2 for 4. The Seraphs (14-13-1) will host Rancho Mirage in Tuesday’s second round.

    SOFTBALL

    Rylee McCoy went 2 for 3 with a double and three-run home run, Ilove'a Brittingham had a two-run double, Giabella Otani had a hit and two RBIs, and Sienna Reynolds allowed five hits in a complete-game effort in the circle to lead Oaks Christian to a 7-4 win over Santa Margarita in a Division 1 wild-card softball game. The Lions (21-4) will visit Los Alamitos in Tuesday’s first round.

    Laci Trevino threw a no-hitter as Chino Hills eliminated Moorpark , 5-0, in a Division 1 wild-card game. The Maddy Finnerty pitched a complete game for the Musketeers, who ended their season at 10-9.

    Jasmine Reyes pitched a five-inning no-hitter with eight strikeouts, Jaslene Rios and Analia Lopez each went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, Keira Barry was 2 for 2 with an RBI, Hailey Olivera and Ciara Lopez each had a hit and two RBIs, and Sarah Coccillos went 2 for 3 to lead Rio Mesa to a 10-0 win over Kennedy in a Division 2 first-round game. The Spartans (23-5) will travel to Temple City in Tuesday's second round.

    Westlake managed just four hits in a 2-0 loss at Tesoro in a Division 2 first-round game. The Warriors ended their season at 18-9.

    Aurelia Ehry hit a three-run home run, Claire Heisinger had a three-run triple, and Aly Chavez pitched 4.2 innings of shutout relief as Agoura came from behind to beat Segerstrom, 9-4, in a Division 3 first-round game. Briona Ferdman and Mia Gomez had two hits apiece for the Chargers (12-7), who will visit Upland in Tuesday’s second round.

    Julianna Galbraith threw a two-hit shutout, striking out six, as Royal beat visiting Irvine-Beckman 3-0 in a Division 3 first-round game. Josephine Gallo and Skylar Gapol had two hits apiece for the Highlanders (14-7), who will play at Charter Oak in Tuesday’s second round.

    Top-seeded Oxnard took a 1-0 lead into the seventh inning, but visiting JW North scored three times in its last at-bat to secure a 3-1 win in a Division 4 first-round game. Baylany Magana was 2 for 2 with a run scored and threw a complete game, allowing four hits, as the Yellowjackets ended their season at 15-9-1.

    Taylor Cook allowed five hits over six innings, striking out eight, but Newbury Park fell 3-1 at Crescenta Valley in a Division 4 first-round game. The Panthers finished their season at 20-7.

    Santa Paula lost 16-0 to visiting Santa Monica in a Division 4 first-round game. The Cardinals ended their season at 12-6.

    Rachel Godoy struck out 10 in a complete-game performance in the cirlce and Izzy Padilla and Janessa Brown slugged home runs as St. Bonaventure rolled past Village Christian, 7-2, in a Division 5 first-round game. Leea Martinez was 1 for 4 with a double and two runs scored for the Seraphs (20-2-1), who will host Fillmore in an all-county second-round showdown Tuesday at Ventura College.

    Emma Estrella threw a one-hit shutout, striking out nine without a walk, to lift Fillmore to a 10-0 win over visiting Bellflower in a Division 5 first-round game. Sofie Aviles and Aryanne Munoz had two hits apiece for the Flashes (15-5-2).

    Roxy Salazar was 2 for 3 with an RBI and three runs scored and also allowed one run and three hits while striking out 11 over seven innings in the circle to lead Grace Brethren to a 9-1 win over Arroyo in a Division 5 first-round game. Grace Maguire went 4 for 4 with three runs scored and three RBIs for the Lancers (17-3-1), who will visit Garden Grove in Tuesday’s second round.

    GIRLS LACROSSE

    Amanda Borg had eight goals and four assists as Royal beat host Irvine-Woodbridge, 18-11, in the first round of the Division 2 girls lacrosse playoffs.

    Morgan Arrasmith finished with four goals and two assists, Lauren Reed had three goals and five assists, and Miranda Torres made nine saves as the Highlanders prevailed in Orange County for the second straight game, despite playing most of the second half down two players due to yellow cards.

    “It was the greatest thing I’ve seen this team do all year,” said head coach Cathe Utterback.

    Royal will host San Juan Hills in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

    Reagan Laubner had three goals and an assist and Elliana Dorsi had two goals, four ground balls and four ground controls, but Newbury Park fell to visiting Redondo Union 17-8 in a Division 1 first-round girls lacrosse game. The Panthers finished their season at 12-3.

    Oak Park lost to Santa Ana-Mater Dei 17-11 in a Division 1 first-round game. The Eagles ended their season at 14-4.

    Bella Malouf had four goals and an assist and Elizabeth Hilbert had three goals, an assist and nine draw controls, but Oaks Christian lost 14-10 to host Anaheim-Canyon in a Division 2 first-round game. The Lions ended their season at 11-6.

    Thacher (9-9) fell to visiting Temecula Valley 16-5 in a Division 3 first-round game.
