Journeyman Distillery announces new head brewer

Greg Winget recently joined the team as head brewer at Journeyman Distillery's American Factory in Valparaiso.

Raised in Indiana, Winget is a journalist and copywriter turned craft brewer. He started out by working in beer sales and distribution. Winget later moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, where he earned a craft brewing certificate from Wake Technical College.

Winget worked for Big Boss Brewing, Fortnight Brewing Co.and Wye Hill Brewing, craft breweries in North Carolina. He became the brewery director at Wye Hill Brewing. During his five-year tenure there, Winget created over 100 beer brands from creative recipes to label art conceptions.

Winget has earned numerous brewing awards across the nation, including gold medals at the North Carolina Brewers Cup and the Great American Beer Festival in Denver.

In his new role at Journeyman Distillery, Winget will help launch the brand’s first foray into brewing with Sea of Monsters, a new microbrewery and tasting room on The American Factory campus. Journeyman Distillery co-founder Bill Welter opened The American Factory in 2023 in his hometown of Valparaiso.

As head brewer, Winget will focus both on regional iterations of American craft beer and beer styles from across the world, including resurrecting ancient recipes. Winget is excited to explore sustainably sourced raw ingredients, using regional hop varieties and locally grown or foraged elements from the Midwest.

Journeyman Distillery was founded in 2020 by Bill and Johanna Welter. The distillery is in Three Oaks, Michigan. The Welters also work with Journeyman Distillery’s nonprofit Islay’s Barrel Foundation, named for their daughter, to raise funds to send kids to local summer camps.
