( KRON ) — Highway closures are going to continue in the Bay Area this weekend. This is the fourth closure of the southbound lanes of I-680 in Pleasanton, and the second closure for parts of Highway 37 in Vallejo.

BART is also planning on closing part of its tracks in Oakland this weekend.

There are detours set up for drivers and buses planned for BART riders, but Caltrans and BART are both asking for patience from travelers who will experience a longer weekend commute time than usual.

The sight of paving and construction along the southbound lanes of I-680 isn't new. This weekend will be the fourth and final time the project closes the interstate from Pleasanton to Sunol.

The closures start at 9 p.m. Friday and reopen at 4 a.m. Monday, according to a Caltrans spokesperson for Alameda County.

"We will be completely replacing the roadway with cement which is a very durable and long-lasting material. So, when the roadway re-opens 4 a.m. Monday it will be a smooth ride for motorists,” said Janis Mara, a Caltrans spokesperson for Alameda County.

Traffic will be rerouted during the work, as well as along Highway 37.

"Starting tomorrow Friday at 9 p.m. we are back on West Bound State route 37 in Vallejo to the Sonoma County Line," Solano County Caltrans spokesperson Hector Chinchilla said.

Chinchilla says this is the second weekend that lanes have been closed to traffic at this location.

"The detour is a long one,” Chinchilla said. “What normally is a seven, ten miles stretch that takes 15 to 20 minutes is now a 25 miles detour that goes through Solano County, Napa County and Sonoma County."

There will be delays by car and by train this weekend. BART will be suspending service between Rockridge Station in Oakland and Lafayette Station this weekend.

BART spokesperson Chris Filippi says it's to keep workers along the tracks safe.

"They'll be replacing lighting in the Berkeley Hills Tunnell, so obviously we don't want to be running trains through the tunnel as our workers are replacing those lights," Filippi said.

He says free buses will be waiting at Rockridge and Lafayette to transport riders to their next stopdding about 20 minutes of travel time, but the work is long overdue.

"Many of the components being replaced across the BART system are more than 50 years old. They got to go. They have outlived their design life," he said.

More work along I-680 and Highway 37 will happen after this weekend. The eastbound lanes between Solano and Sonoma counties will be closed next weekend and paving is scheduled on I-680 in San Ramon next month.
