URBANA — An Urbana man has been accused of entering his ex-girlfriend’s home and attempting to stab her new boyfriend.

Champaign County Judge Brett Olmstead ruled April 24 that Gerardo Guiterrez-Carillo, 51, can remain free ahead of his trial on charges with home invasion with a deadly weapon, home invasion causing injury and criminal trespass to a residence while a person was present.

Assistant State’s Attorney Chris McCallum said on April 21, Guiterrez-Carillo entered a home on Northwood Drive in Urbana that belonged to a woman he had previously been in a relationship with while she was there with other people, including her new boyfriend.

Guiterrez-Carillo allegedly approached the woman’s new boyfriend, who was sitting on the couch, and said “What did I tell you” before kicking the man in the face, McCallum said.

The victim stood up, and Guiterrez-Carillo then pulled out a knife and attempted to stab him but did not succeed, McCallum said. The other people present were able to get Guiterrez-Carillo out of the residence as one person put him into a bear hug.

Guiterrez-Carillo allegedly tried to get back in before eventually leaving. Once arrested, he admitted to police that he entered the residence and kicked the victim in the face, McCallum said.

The state petitioned for Guiterrez-Carillo to remain in jail ahead of trial, but Olmstead denied that request.

Guiterrez-Carillo faces six to 30 years in prison if he is convicted of home invasion, a Class X felony. He is next scheduled to appear in court later this month.
