Toledo businessman to be honored for promoting Italian culture
NEW YORK — A Toledo businessman, developer, and community leader is being honored at an annual event that recognizes individuals and organizations for enhancing Italy’s global image and cultural impact. Nick Eyde, owner of Geyde Development Co. in Toledo, is receiving the Italian Reputation Award. He is to be honored Saturday at Carnegie Hall in New York City. A longtime business and community leader, Mr. Eyde spearheaded the effort to bring the Italian Bowl to Toledo, where it was held at the University of Toledo in 2023 and 2025. His connection to Italy began with football and grew into a lifelong appreciation for the country, its people and culture, which became more personal when he met his wife, Gaia, in Italy. “Italy became part of my life in a way I never expected,” Mr. Eyde said. “What started with football became a love for the country, its people, and its culture. “Meeting Gaia changed my life, and bringing the Italian Bowl to Toledo was a way to share some of that connection with my hometown. I am deeply honored to receive this award.”

Fremont plant closing to end 61 jobs
FREMONT — About 61 employees of a local paper-coating factory will lose their jobs when plant operations are moved to Wisconsin. Pixelle Specialty Solutions, Inc., filed a WARN Act notice Friday that the sale of its carbonless sheet production to paper manufacturer Nekoosa will end operations at a plant at 2775 Commerce Dr. The first layoffs will occur Dec. 1, the company said in the filing with the Ohio Department of Labor. The balance of the plant’s work force will be terminated in stages dictated by the operational wind-down, the filing said. Pixelle is a papermaker with primary operations in Spring Grove, Pa. The Fremont plant applies coatings and tinting to its paper. Carbonless sheet is a paper that allows duplicate copies to be made without using carbon layers. Instead, the paper has a coating of tiny capsules that release dye when the paper is written on. Pixelle’s filing states that the carbonless line is the Fremont plant’s principal operation.
